"I had an epiphany last year when I read my umpteenth Alex Delaware novel: Jonathan Kellerman's run out of plots. I don't know why I keep reading them; god knows I don't expect anything different.
In Compulsion, the first hint that something's amiss is when someone takes a Bentley out for an unauthorized spin, a victimless crime. A mere speck of blood is found on the front passenger seat. Yawn. A few weeks later, a woman is stabbed to death in her front yard, the killer makes his escape in a Mercedes C500. Only Alex Delaware would make a connection between the two crimes...in LA County, no less. Granted they're not Honda Civics, but tieing two disparate crimes together because they have luxury sedans in common? In LA?? Please, give me a break.
This is my first attempt at an audiobook which I don't enjoy for several reasons: 1) the narrator's dramatization kills what I've imagined these characters to sound like; 2) the narrator's sort of but not really accents drive me insane (the Indian restaurant's proprietor comes to mind); and 3) I can read faster than he can speak.
Believe me, #3 is all I'm thinking about when I'm listening to the book. I thought an audiobook would make my machine cardio workouts go by faster but boy was I wrong. If I make it through the book (doubtful), this will be my last Alex Delaware novel. Maybe Kellerman should relegate AD to a supporting role and write another Petra Connor book."
"Not a WOW....and not his best. Odd subplots that seem not to tie in to the story in any way and Alex Delaware seems to have absolutely nothing to do other than be a sidekick for Milo Sturgis. What's up with that? Did he retire? Is Robin supporting him by making mandolins for rich admirers with MS (one of the aforementioned random subplots)? Anyway, there is plenty of action and plenty of creepy bad guys but not so much in the way of continuity of storyline."
"It's an ok read, but Jonathan and company have surely got a formula going. Fill a little over three hundred pages with tightly edited chatter that goes nowhere, then wrap up the three or four plot lines in the final two chapters. This is a book you can read on an airplane or, as in my case, while riding in the back seat of a car going cross-country.
You can leave it at a rest stop when you're finished. You got some entertainment out of it, but no reason to ever read it again. I think this will be the last Kellerman book I pick up. - Unless I need to be brain dead again on another trip."
"A fun vacation read, but not appreciably different from the other Alex and Milo books.
I'm going to reprint my friend Jackie's review, as I think it describes the book really well. "Usual Kellerman here....almost a Kellerman Mad Lib..it is that formula...and as a bookcrossing friend pointed out to me...half the book is about what they eat...lunch and dinner is described in more detail than the crimes or criminals being chased. So in review....Bad guy does something...Milo eats alone...Milo Eats with Alex...more crime...Alex eats with Robin....more crime...Alex eats alone....Alex and Milo eat in a car...more crime....Alex offers to eat with Milo but Milo isn't hungry. Crime is solved.""
