"Wonderful story of a confused teenager set in pre-Revolutionary area United States. I love the contrast between the very personal and yet universal drama set against the period backdrop."
"I really wanted to like this book as it had some nice historical details as seen through the eyes of the protagonist who was an indentured servant in 18th century Massachusetts. However, far too many pages were wasted on vacillating mental monologues which are fine once in a while but not throughout the whole book. It was very difficult to understand the character's reasons for her actions when she didn't appear to understand them herself, or her reasons kept changing. I prefer characters which are more decisive and oriented."
"This book is about a young girl whose family immigrates from England. On her way to America, her mother and her brother die aboard the ship, so her father decides he cannot raise her by himself. He sells her to a family to be an indentured servant. This takes place in the mid 1700's and is an interesting depiction of that little known piece of American history."
"This is a great example of historical fiction which depicts a not widely represented era. It's set in 1756 with the stirring of the imminent revolution so it's quite informative. Two of the characters were introduced in Sally Gunning's earlier book "The Widow's War" which I highly recommend as well. I'm guessing that the group will enjoy discussing this one as much as we did the previous book especially since we live close to Cape Cod which is the setting."
