"This is about when Will, and Evalyn are slaves of the Skandians, but then are saved by Halt and Horace. However, they findout that the Temujai are planning to invade Skandia. Halt agrees to help them fight and undefeated enemy. Will figured that if the Skandians train archers, they might have a chance to win. They only have 100 archers, are slaves, and are trained by Will."
"OK, this book is the best in the series. The characters and situations are interesting and there's still plenty of action.
It was only in the last book (3rd of the series) that I finally understood the rough correlation between real European culture/geography and the peoples of this series. English, Welsh, Norse, and then the wimpy French in the last book. In this story, the equivalent culture of the Mongols comes attacking and the characters mention again the huge numbers of efficient attackers in the south deserts across the sea. (i.e. the Muslim hordes) They've been mentioned two books in a row, what do you bet a huge campaign/movement by these southern attackers eats up 3 or 4 books in a few years?
Anyway, good, fun story full of action and fighting. The romantic subplot had me guessing who, what, and when."
"This book was much, much better than the third. Thank you, Mr. Author for redeeming yourself. Except for the super cheesy cover which makes my husband laugh hysterically any time he sees it.
Lots of action. Lots of character development. Erak is really prominent in this book and he is hilarious. I so appreciate comic relief when things get tense. There is quite a bit of fighting in the book and some description of the battle wounds. I didn't find it gruesome, but some younger kids might. Some nice lessons on tolerance and compromise as well.
I will read the rest of the series. I'd have no problems with my boys reading this one. Just that 3rd one makes me hesitate...."
"This episode is tightly integrated with the third and basically continues the plot straight on. Again, I'm not entirely happy with the weaker presentation of Evanlyn's character (and as the only female character for several episodes, now, she even more so stands for all women in this entirely male world), even though she clearly plays a substantial role, both politically and in the battle. I thought her spying trip was handled in a disappointingly offhand manner, as though it had been cut wholesale during editing and not tidied up.
This series continues to show simplifications and lack of examination of themes that makes it more suitable for younger readers. The adventure is good; the depth of context around the adventure is not so much, even though there is plenty of room for it as good themes are introduced but never given realistic shading. It's as though this is the "lite" version of a much more interesting treatment of the story. I really don't get whether the author is treating his themes superficially or if he's deliberately dumbing them down as some sort of editorial mandate.
The ongoing plot wraps with this installment; the next book takes up some years later, so if one were buying some but not all of the series, this would be a natural stopping-point. I should also point out that this is really an adventure story of medieval Europe, not, after the first volume, a typical fantasy with evil sorcerers and slavering bestial minions meeting in epic battle with blahblahblah. There's no other magic after that than plain forest craft.
Overall, then, entertaining but superficial and less mature than they really need to be. They aren't likely to please those who want to see female characters realistically a part of the plot: this is entirely a boy story in the old fashioned sense."
