"This book actually did strengthen my faith. And it goes far to correct for some of the strange excesses of American popular "Christianity" which I have to admit takes over my mind and drives a wedge between me and the rational wholeness of the Christian tradition.
He does have a couple of peculiar ideas about the foundations of evil that I can't really get behind, and I think he involves himself in some speculation (some speculation he identifies as such, but some of his core ideas are speculation as well), but it surely can be no worse than what Fundamentalism and popular Christianity presents and I think is far better (see "strengthen my faith")."
"Never have I struggled through what I suspect is a very worthwhile, postive, breathtaking, even life changing book for a person with faith. The title is right - what are modern Christians' views of resurrection, heaven, the mission of the church, and the future. NT Wright suggests most of us have got it wrong, but getting it right will be transforming!
Still, this is probably not a book for someone carrying a lot of baggage from a strict church upbringing, though Wright talks from an Anglican perspective. The first 80 pages were a cloud of painful "what is the point" I believe this or that, so this is not an issue for me ... what is the point, ..."
Finally, some breakthroughs after 80 pages - but for just a few pages, then more chapters of fog, doctrinal points following a painstaking step by step journey through careful arguments. Until the last chapter. I think I've found a book that needs an editor, or a limit of 200 pages, so pick the best ones.
Such a pity, because the author says what we do on earth counts, and it counts for the Earth as God's creation, something that will be transformed and redeemed - all based on Jesus being physically resurrected. Heaven will not be "up there", but will join the Earth in a redeemed creation, our future will not be on clouds..
The author makes so much sense, is so full of loving integrity, provides so much hope, enthusiasm even, but presented in a way that gave me a headache, pounding, pounding, pounding... Normal people should rate this a 4 to 4.5"
"This is a really excellent book from a world-renown and respected author, not to mention a highly respected theologian. Even though I was raised in the church and have been active in my church for many, many years including many Bible studies, this book has opened the scripture to me in new ways. I have learned so much about early Christian beliefs and why they are the core of what we should be teaching in the church today. Read it. Study it. You will love it."
"Whoops. It seems we may have been missing the point of the mission of the church.
N.T. Wright forces us to look critically at the early church and how they viewed the resurrection. Our contemporary "Christian formula" probably goes something like this:
God created - man sinned - God came - God died - God rose again = we all go to heaven if we accept Jesus.
The disciples, however, seem to have a very different reaction to the resurrection. When Jesus comes from the empty tomb, rather than thrilled with their own salvation, they have a stinkingly different focus. Their formula might look like this:
God created - man sinned - God came - God died - God rose again = so everything God said must be true and we have a lot of work to do.
N.T. Wright eloquently puts to words the frustration of many directed at the "choose heaven or choose hell" method of evangelism and mission of the local church. The kingdom of heaven is not something that is waiting for heaven. Wright's call is more inspiring than critical, more informative than judging, and more exciting than discouraging. I learned a lot about the importance of historical context, of reading scripture well, and about how I'm rethinking the mission of the church.
A favorite quote (p. 56):
"Insofar as the event is interpreted, Easter has a very this-worldly, present-age meaning: Jesus is raised, so he is the Messiah, and therefore he is the world's true Lord; Jesus is raised, so God's new creation has begun - and we, his followers have a job to do!""
