Interesting. I don't think I could stick to the exact work-outs they give in the book, but I found the general ideas worthwhile
-more protein after workouts -eating more on workout days in general (only about 200-300 cal. more) -full-body lifting
I am just not a regimented person so for me personally, I'm never going to count calories or have a strict work-out schedule, but I would look into making sure to get more protein in my diet and I most definitely will take off a full week from working out if I'm hitting the gym hard every 4-5 weeks. Sign me up for that. Other ideas were ones that I already knew or were more common sense. Eat whole grains, lean proteins, nuts and legumes, dark colored veggies and fruits, etc. etc.
Although I did know interval training is a good idea, I didn't know exactly why. I also liked how they showed you how to calculated how many calories you should be eating. I'm so sick of these other sources going with 1200-1400 cal. diets. I would waste away to nothing."
"This is good, solid information if you want to go beyond "the Barbie dumbbells", as the author calls them.
I found some essential information about how muscle groups wrap around your body, so my neck and back pain has more to do with weak hamstrings than with weak "core" strength.
Goodbye Pilates! I'll probably continue to do some Yoga, but I'm heading to the gym to build me some muscles and the bone that supports them.
The only thing I differ in opinion with is the 40/30/30 Protein/Carb/Fat ratio. I'll stick to Dean Ornish's lower fat and low to no animal protein ratios. Plant protein combination has been proven since the 1980's, and calcium don't come from cows."
"Similar to the New Rules of Lifting, emphasizing compound movements and providing weight-lifting programs, but for women. Though I'm a woman, I don't think that I am part of the target audience for this book. It addresses "female concerns" such getting too bulky, working out in a male-dominated area of the gym, more detailed info on diet, etc. As a (somewhat out of practice) martial artist and engineer, I did a lot of eye-rolling while reading this. Women who are intimidated by the free weights area of the gym and/or concerned with minimizing their size may very well find that it meets their needs. I preferred the original New Rules of Lifting, and, after checking both books out from the library, the original was the only one I bought."
