"I feel like this book is more deserving of three and a half stars, but as there is no half star option, I'm rounding up.
When I realized the narrative was in the present tense, I worried that I might not enjoy the book as much. I found this irksome, but I let it go and settled in to enjoy the story.
Janie Hannigan is a senior in high school who is trying to rise above her dysfunctional family life by keeping her nose clean and preparing for college. It's her only way out of her troubled home--that is, if falling into other people's dreams doesn't drive her insane first. Ever since she was little, she has been pulled into other people's dreams the moment they doze off. She has found herself witness to some embarrassing, tragic and horrifying experiences because of it. With the passing of the years, Janie has learned to live with her "gift" and has even accepted their occurences with a bored resignation--until one day she is pulled into a horrifying dream unlike anything she has ever experienced in the past.
Though McMann has some very original ideas and great plot twists, some of her creative choices did not sit well with me. Although I was put off by the strong language, I understand the book's main characters are teenagers and she is writing for young adults. It becomes excessive, however, when it trickles into the police force. Now, I am not naive enough to think police officers don't sometimes use strong language among themselves, but when the police chief uses it in front of a minor whom she is supposed to be interviewing, it becomes unrealistic. Any officer doing it would be considered out of line. Janie reading self-help books was another eyebrow raiser. We have a child with a paranormal ability and she learns to contol it with self help books?
Other problems were, as I said, the present tense usage throughout the book, but the lack of full sentences towards the end is sloppy and inexcusable. I think a better editor was needed to keep that and the typos in check.
McMann, however, writes a very engaging first novel despite its flaws. Janie was a very real character with strengths and imperfections. She is a typical teenager going through major angst who worries about school, college, having friends and dealing with romance troubles. I found myself disliking her when she acts selfishly towards her boyfriend and rooting for her as she tries to take control of her gift and use it for the benefit of others.
The plot twists were very good and some I never saw coming. I like that in a book. If McMann can continue to improve on the language usage and make that as good as her ideas, her next novel will be one to look forward to."
"This book took me for a ride. I couldn't get enough of Janie's dysfunctional personal and family life. Janie's character is was having such a difficult time, and I wanted to cry with her so many times. I felt her frustration and pain.
The writing though simple didn't fail to suck me in. I was worried when I started that the writing was so simplistic, so easy that I might feel like a child reading and would get caught up in it and wouldn't be able to get past it. But I did, and the story was so intriguing, the twists and turns of Janie's everyday life and the dreams she experiences left me breathless, on an emotional roller coaster.
I am especially fond of dreams, not what they mean as much as what they look like, how they are experienced and so on, so this book was an experience to read. Every dream Janie went through was electrifying. I wanted more. The curiosity in me wanted to be nosy some more, to see what people were dreaming.
The main characters were mt favorite. Cabel and Janie were so good together. He balanced her so well. She was the distant girl. He--the troubled accessible yet secretive love interest. The heartache of each one was as real as the words on the page and with each turn of the page I fell more and more in love with them and their story. The ups and downs of Janie and her relationships were dynamic and were at the heart of the story. Janie is a driving force to be reckoned with. No, not with a car but with her mind and her talent, or rather her curse?
I absolutely cannot wait to get "FADE" the way this ended and the new excerpt I read looks I want more more more! Anybody wanna let me borrow it? pretty please?
In the end I was left breathless, the action that was packed in the last chapter or so felt utterly exhilarating. I was left begging for the next event, even for the next paragraph or words."
