"When I picked this book up I was exctied. My library marked it a suspense and after reading the inside cover, I was hooked...but that tiny bit was better than the entire story. I was very disappointed. It had a good concept and the potential to be something, but it fell short in so many ways.
It wasn't a suspense at all! If there was a climax, I guess I missed it. Boring.
When there was dialogue, it was really cheesy. I rolled my eyes way to much.
I didn't like any of the characters. They were completely stupid. The one the that drove me more nuts than them all was Cabel...at first he seemed to be a "bad boy" but he turned out only to be a weak baby that liked to cry all the time.
I couldn't stand the writing style...It felt like I was reading a police report. Choppy, short sentences of facts. No flow whatsoever.
This book will be easily forgetable and I'm not going to waste any more of my time on McMann's other book 'FADE'. I'm hoping WAKE will quickly FADE from my mind when I go to sleep tonight.
Will I let my teen daughter read this book...NO...need I say more???"
"Janie has a hard life. She has an alcoholic, neglectful mother and she gets sucked into other peoples dreams. If someone falls asleep near her she is pulled into their dreams. She has suffered through many booty call dreams and other people's nightmares unable to do anything but watch. She has never told anyone about this but after a long bus ride with tons of people napping Cabel, sitting next to her figures out what's going on. She wants to trust Cabel but catches him in many lies. Janie accidently meets another person with her same ability. As Janie learns to trust Cabel and develop control over getting sucked into people's dreams he starts to get hop for her future.
This was a good book. McMann has a deceptively easy, minimal writing still. She is able to pack in a lot of raw emotion in very few words. This book was a quick read and I really enjoyed it. I really found myself caring for Cabel and Janie. I was rooting for things to work out between them. However there was too many 'booty call' dreams and cussing for me to be able to recommend it to my friends. I also had a hard time believing if the police department had used a person's dreams before that they would act on Janie's dreams so quickly and pull her into an important investigation."
"This book took me for a ride. I couldn't get enough of Janie's dysfunctional personal and family life. Janie's character is was having such a difficult time, and I wanted to cry with her so many times. I felt her frustration and pain.
The writing though simple didn't fail to suck me in. I was worried when I started that the writing was so simplistic, so easy that I might feel like a child reading and would get caught up in it and wouldn't be able to get past it. But I did, and the story was so intriguing, the twists and turns of Janie's everyday life and the dreams she experiences left me breathless, on an emotional roller coaster.
I am especially fond of dreams, not what they mean as much as what they look like, how they are experienced and so on, so this book was an experience to read. Every dream Janie went through was electrifying. I wanted more. The curiosity in me wanted to be nosy some more, to see what people were dreaming.
The main characters were mt favorite. Cabel and Janie were so good together. He balanced her so well. She was the distant girl. He--the troubled accessible yet secretive love interest. The heartache of each one was as real as the words on the page and with each turn of the page I fell more and more in love with them and their story. The ups and downs of Janie and her relationships were dynamic and were at the heart of the story. Janie is a driving force to be reckoned with. No, not with a car but with her mind and her talent, or rather her curse?
I absolutely cannot wait to get "FADE" the way this ended and the new excerpt I read looks I want more more more! Anybody wanna let me borrow it? pretty please?
In the end I was left breathless, the action that was packed in the last chapter or so felt utterly exhilarating. I was left begging for the next event, even for the next paragraph or words."
