"The book was slightly bi-polar. It would be lighthearted and funny for a few pages and then would swiftly fall into a depression-filled wonderland of drugs and emptiness.
Then there were the times where it was incredibly, utterly, boring. As a fan of Brand's it was frustrating to read that he really got carried to stardom by other people's tolerance of his ridiculous behaviour.
That and there really isn't any closure because the man is still young, and really just starting his career. The book could use another edit.
To be honest, I wasn't quite sure what to take away at all. The book is well written, and tells you about Brand, but it didn't make me think, cry, or roll on the floor.
I was expecting it to be uproariously funny and instead I got amusing.
But perhaps there is something that isn't carried across the pond effectively, especially when several jokes had to be explained by British-ism footnotes, which were informative, but not conducive to chuckles."
"I'm a huge fan of Russell and when i heard his book was called My Booky Wook?! i knew i just had to read it! I've only just started but so far, so funny!
For some weird reason unbeknownst to me, when i read it i feel the way i do when i read travelography (or whatever they call it) funny, endearing, you literally feel like you're on a journey with the writer. His "booky wook" shows he's a person constantly deep in thought on the inside. It shows how he's quite analytical of himself and those around him, those who've left a mark on his life.
When he talks about his parents and nans i think of the film How To Be (a small british film) and the similarities between russell and the movie's main character Art. I'm so proud and inspired by their ability to step outside from themselves and their situations (with family etc) and just look upon their lives as outsiders, as angels just hanging above, watching.
Anyway Go READ THIS BOOKY WOOK! you will enjoy it, I promise!"
"I gave this Russell Brand memoir one-star not because of the obscene and raunchy scenarios (I'm not a prude!), but because it was boring! He whines and bemoans about the struggle to become famous, but the whole time, he is presented with so many opportunities - he screws it up on his own accord. Some of the scenes seem so preposterous - i.e his father taking him to Hong Kong for hookers. I just didn't know how much to believe.
He's actually a good writer (better than a lot of celebrity "writers" out there now), but he makes a lot of English references, so perhaps, this is written for a different audience. He tries to put footnotes for all the jokes that refer to something British so everyone can be in on the joke. But once you read the footnote, then go back to read the joke, it's just not that funny anymore. I actually wanted to read this memoir because I thought he would talk about his time with Judd Apatow and gang, filming Forgetting Sarah Marshall and his stints on the MTV VMAs - perhaps dishing out celebrity dirt; however, this book was about his life prior to his work in cinema. I believe he's coming out with book #2, probably about his film and hosting gigs, but I just couldn't get into this book, so I probably won't read the next one."
"I had not heard of Russell Brand prior to hearing about this book on GR. I have to say that I find his style of writing and wit incredibly refreshing and very readable. i am not sure I have read or heard someone use such a diverse variety of words, slang and descriptions. His cultural references are funny even if you have never heard of who he is referring to partly because he does footnotes but mainly because you are on board with his thoughts. Clever yet simple is the way I would describe him. This book is brutally honest and he has a way of being humble while also describing himself as an egotistical selfish person. I have to say that he seems totally likable despite a complete collapse of a moral compass. The book started strong, picked up some momentum in the middle but unfortunately for me ended in a bit of a sticky wicket. (see, you find yourself talking like him)It got muddied up and confusing at the end as if he tried to tie up all the loose ends in the last 10 pages but nothing gets tied up. I assume that is because he has a second book that continues on but that does sort of screw everyone which is basically what this book is about.
If you have a somewhat thick skin for crude and shocking behavior in the context of a biography I think this is worth the read. Not for the faint of heart but he makes about everything comical. I will read whatever he writes next but I doubt I could see him perform. a bit too much for me. I recommend him to play Captain Jack Sparrow's younger brother in the next Pirates Of The Caribbean movie. He lives the part.
