"I have to say, Rick Steves is kinda a genius at what he does. In the beginning, this seemed like a really basic book that gets you where you need to be. Easy. But after embarking on a ten day backpacking journey through Croatia and Italy (we bought the Rough Guide to Italy and ended up ditching out on the Slovenia portion of our trip), Steves proved to be a godsend. Believe me, if you're jumbled around between cities and languages, direct and to-the-point info from a veteran traveler is what you need. His small, but precise detailing is what makes Steves great.
For example, we journeyed to Plitvice National Park and were amazed to see that Steves provided complete detailing (as in, "You will pass this tree at this point, which you'll need to turn left at if you wish to go on the lower lakes path." which proved to be so helpful and save us like 15euro on a map! Plus, this same attention to detail is throughout his art depictions inside cathedrals and other places. Steves manages to write in a way that is spatial perfection. He's standing where you've stood and tells you your surroundings. Which is to say, he writes from a traveler's perspective. Not a writer's. Not a historian's. Not via bullet point check list, but someone who knows what there is to see and how to get you there."
"i bought several books for our recent trip, but none were so helpful as rick steves. all of his recommendations- the restaurants, places to visit, places to stay were right on the money. i even met the co-author on our trip and i now have a signed copy. indeed, i was starstruck."
"This was very useful in the preliminary stages of planning a two-week trip to Croatia this upcoming May. It not only helped me figure out where I wanted to go, but provided great transportation tips. I've used several Rick Steves guides, and while I don't like to depend on him completely, he undeniably knows his stuff when it comes to Europe."
