"Summary- This book is intended for students in middle school. The Mozart Question is about a young reporter who gets sent to Venice to interview the famous violinist Paolo Levi. Before leaving for her trip she gets one piece of advice, "Don't ask the Mozart Question." Not knowing what that meant, she goes to do her interview. After arriving at the interview, she is nervous and doesn't know what to say so she says, "Well, I know I can't ask you the Mozart question...because I've been told not to. I don't even know what is." After saying this Paolo Levi begins talking and tells her about his family. He tells her how his parents had a violin at their house that they never played. One day his mom had showed him the violin and he would sneak out of the house and get violin lessons. He never knew why his parents didn't play until one day his music teacher met up with his parents. Ironically, his teacher and parents knew each other. They had all played in an orchestra together in the Concentration Camps during the Holocaust. As prisoners would get off their trains and begin making their way to gas chambers, the orchestra would calm them down with soothing music - Mozart. Paolo's father had asked him to never play Mozart again while he was alive because it would remind him of the horror of the concentration camps. So Paolo didn't ever play Mozart."
"2010 list-This is an interview with a violinist whose parents were Jewish musicians during the Holocaust. It's a short little children's book, and I am rather surprised it was selected as a Rebecca Caudill. I'm guessing it's for the illustrations. It can be read in less than an hour."
"This is a beautiful book about a young boy who discovered the violin, secrets from his parents past, and how he helped his parents deal with their past. It is for younger readers but every adult would appreciate the wonderful story as well."
"A reporter gets her big chance when her no nonsense boss is unable to do an interview with a famous violinist, Paolo Levi. She has been warned not to ask the "Mozart Question" and tells him right off the bat that she won't ask that question. Given his rapport with her, he tells her the story behind the question. His parents were musicians who never played again after being forced by the Nazis to play in the orchestra for the SS in their concentration camp. Eventually, they realize they are practicing to play for an even more horrific purpose other than to entertain the SS. They are required to play as the trains of Jews are unloaded. They play Mozart to calm the confused Jews as they are sorted. For Paolo's parents, the joy of music dies even as they survive the concentration camp. Interesting writing prompt - how far would yougo to save your own life? Would you do what Paolo's parents did?"
