About this title: For about two decades, John W Loftus was a devout evangelical Christian, an ordained minister of the Church of Christ, and an ardent apologist for Christianity. With three degrees - in philosophy, theology, and philosophy of religion - he was adept at using rational argumentation to defend the faith. But over the years, as he ministered to various congregations and taught at Christian colleges, doubts about the credibility of key Christian tenets began to creep into his thinking. By the late 1990s, he experienced a full-blown crisis of faith, brought on by emotional upheavals in his personal ...

"This book has excellent excerpts and if I had nothing better to do I would love devouring the mountain of research and information that must have gone into creating it. However the topic - WHY Christians are misinformed - just isn't relevant to my life as an Atheist. I gave it just over 50 pages and I'm ready to move onto re-reading The Blind Watchmaker. Apologetics just aren't my thing. The field to me seems to comprise of circular arguments that are never going to convince "one side" or "the other." Why can't we just focus more on commonalities than on why we all disagree?"
"This is an interesting read; certainly heartfelt to be sure from author John. W. Loftus.
The difficulty is that John seems to have little to no real understanding of just exactly what makes someone a Christian.
Most "ex-Christians" will vehemently tell you that they WERE once a Christian, but are no longer. In fact, most have not only left Christianity, but have firmly embraced atheism.
The trouble is that it readily appears the definition of being a Christian used by these "ex-Christians" is based on the outward; which is not at all biblical. They completely leave out anything resembling a "spiritual transaction" that the Bible says takes place when by faith, we receive Christ as Savior. Most of these "ex-Christians" simply ignore the biblical meaning of being a Christian.
They say they went to church, read the Bible, prayed, etc., (and I have no doubt that they did), and some will even say they prayed the "sinner's prayer," however to arrive at the point where they are now at, is completely incongruent with the teaching of the Bible.
John spends a good amount of time attempting to exegete (interpret) Scripture, but the attempts are full of holes and are easily handled. In fact, some of the charges against Scripture and individuals like Luke (wrote Acts and Luke), are embarrassing to actually have to deal with, due to the ease with which they are handled.
The praise of men listed at the beginning of John's book reads like a "Who's Who of Atheism" and of course, it is one platitude after another. Then again, what would one expect from another atheist?
There are also a few praises from well known Christian scholars, which certainly mean more to me than the self-aggrandizing praise of atheists.
I'm hopeful for those who read this book that they can keep an open mind, which is what I started out with. I also hope the eyes of "ex-Christians" will be opened to see the problem with their own current "testimony."
"John Loftus presents an in depth study of why religion is unreasonable (mainly christianity). A must for any free thinker. A bit of a slow read with great emphasis on theology. The reader must have an average knowledge of christian theology before attempting to read this awesome book."
