"If you want to thrive in life, you should read this book. If you want to lead organizations or find yourself in a leadership role, you should read this book. It flows easily and makes a compelling case for visionary, team-based leadership."
"I would have never read this book had it not been for the free audio version I found through Zecco.com. I was't looking for yet another business book, much less a management book, but this one really surprised me and hit me hard. The book in a nutshell talks about 5 stages that organizations and the members of organizations go through:
1 - Life sucks. 2 - My life sucks (but maybe there's something better). 3 - I'm in it for me. 4 - We're in it as a group with a core set of values; there is a higher purpose. We're great. 5 - Our values are everything. We're not fighting competition, we're fighting for a cause.
Admittedly, this list sounds pretty straightforward, possibly even obvious, but reading the examples of what kind of thoughts people in each of the five stages think was like having my mind read. It became clear to me what stage I've been in (3) and what stage my company is in (mostly 3, possibly occasionally dipping into 4).
It's one thing to find out exactly where you are, it's another thing altogether to know exactly where you could go next and have a good idea how to get there. This book gave as clear an indication of that as I've ever seen. I feel like after having read this it will be much easier to recognize the next "stage" when I see it and to consciously move in that direction. Great read, and since the audio is free and relatively short (6 hours), there's really no reason not to give it a try."
"This is a really valuable book for an aspect of life. It's pretty much common sense, but so much of using common sense is "seeing" it in the first place. This book really focuses you on the relationships and verbal cues between people, whether at work or at home. Very eye opening. It's motivated me to make some changes in my life!"
"After reading Marcus' review I knew this was exactly the type of book that I love to read. (see his review for a great summary of the book) I am always in search of people who inventively shift the way we think, perform, perceive, interact. This book does that very well. It is somewhat similar to "Blue Ocean Strategy" in that it proposes powerful shift of typical economic philosophies. The examples that they describe are pretty successful at supporting their theories. My only reservation is the little bit of anti-capitalism that came through in parts. Or maybe it's more of anti-competitiveness. (this might just be me being fresh off reading "Atlas Shrugged") They do put forth reasoning why your competitive nature is not as important as the world of business thinks. It just seems like everyone of their examples highlighted very competitive/capitalistic people that uses those characteristics to get to the top. Once there, they were in position to adopt the more enlightened philosophies of this research. So my only argument would be it might be necessary to remain in stage 3 in order to be in position to choose to elevate your company to 4 and 5. The greatest benefit of reading this book is not even in the book. I believe the principles emphasized could be even more powerful in personal settings such as in families, schools, religion (which I think it is already), friendships, even soccer teams. I would recommend it highly. Every "boss" + entrepreneur should read it."
