About this title: Offering compelling historical evidence, the authors maintain that most of what Christians do in present-day churches is not rooted in the New Testament, but in pagan culture and rituals developed long after the death of the apostles.

"This was a very well researched book. The authors looked at so many angles and sources to back up wihat they were talking about. This book give a history of the Church, from start to present. They tell of the rituals and rules of the church how they caqme into being. Where did we get these practices, why do churches have steeples, what is the podium for, the altar, how is the ritual of the church differant today than from the first century. Some chapters include: 1. the church building 2. Order of worship 3. the sermon 4, the Pastor 5. Sunday morning costumes 6. ministers of music 7. tithing and clergy salaries.. and so on. VERY inlightening and explains why some of the scriptures say one thing but the "church" does something differant. Traditions of men."
"A powerful book. If you're not at a place in your spiritual walk where you have a firm faith in God, this will yeild an uneasy, angry, or (even worse) flippant reaction. To me, however, it addressed and/or confirmed many vague concepts I've had about "church" vs "The Church" over the past years. It's a book that will change your understanding of biblical worship and community.
My overwhelming reaction was dissapointment when I realized there were VERY few people you can honestly work through a book like this with. Any pastor or church worker will never be able to deal with it honestly because they've basically staked their entire lives on this book being wrong. Therefore, I won't even try to have an honest discussion with them about it. Then there are people who just aren't ready for it...they're convinced that American Church is birthed directly from the bible and have no willingness to look outside that box for the truth.
While I find this book inspiring and informative, I mostly find it sad that it's something that can't really be shared. Maybe just passing it along to someone is the best hope of a future honest discussion of the concepts..."
"A lot of our modern-day practices in the institutional church originated from pagan customs in the early centuries. This book discusses these various origins and how far today's church has come from what is seen in the New Testament. Some of these practices that arose from pagan origins are the order of worship, sermons, the distinction between clergy and laity, and church buildings themselves. I can see why this book is so controversial. There are some good points brought out in the book. It is important to know why we do what we do and not just continue to do something solely because it's "the way we've always done it". There should be purpose behind what we do. However, just because the modern-day church doesn't match what is seen in the New Testament doesn't mean that it isn't biblical. I would recommend this book for pastors and church leaders to perhaps re-evaluate the reasons why they do things a certain way. However, I would also say that the book seems to be throwing out the baby along with the bathwater, as the saying goes."
"Frank Viola takes a sober look at how Christianity has wandered away over the past 2000 years from it's New Testament roots. He deconstructs the church traditions of the Catholic and Protestant faith and examines each piece carefully. His main thrust throughout the book is that many of the things we baptize and call "Christian" actually have pagan roots. Whether or not you agree with his findings, he asserts they are historical fact.
If you love the tradition of your church, or do not want to have your worldview turned upside down, do not read this book. However, if you want to see how our traditions have frustrated the free move of the Holy Spirit, you will be encouraged to see that there is more to life than just going to church; God has empowered you to be the church."
