"Much more a philosophy book than I had expected, this one spends a lot of time sorting out the philosophical underpinnings of atheism vs. theism. A good and thought-provoking book but definitely not light reading. I was a bit underwhelmed by the portion where he finally gets to what it means to be atheist and spiritual, but overall it provided some good food for thought."
"Back when I was a fiery little atheist, I remember having a huge argument with an interfaith group of students who were talking in confusing circles about spirituality. Knowing that I was an atheist, a humanist, and a naturalist, I felt the (seemingly) undefinable notion of "spirituality" didn't apply to someone like me, and for a long time afterward, that term always put a bad taste in my mouth.
I've mellowed quite a bit since then, and now I find myself reexamining the concept of spirituality from an atheist's perspective, and Comte's book was a timely discovery for me. It's a refreshing break from the harsher, more scientific literature out there (which I still dearly love, but don't have much to learn from them anymore), exploring the philosophical aspects of an atheist's spiritual life. This book isn't going to be for everyone, but since I've been asking the very question he poses -- Can there be an atheist spirituality? -- it was comforting to read about the author's own experiences."
"I'd give it a 3.5/5. It's pretty good, but the entire last third of the book is so new-agey it's ridiculous (and this coming from someone who's usually sympathetic to new-age language). Overall it has a great message and preaches tolerance, respect, and love. It just doesn't dig incredibly deep into the issues, and, like I said, the third part is so out-of-character for the book as a whole. It's like the author dozed off and started sleep-writing... very odd. Again, I sympathize with new-age sentiments... but in this book it just seemed out of place and too much. All the same, it's a nice, short, inspiring read. I do recommend it."
Part of the attraction for me was the mention of Stoic philosophy and Eastern thought, which I find appealing. The author is respectful of all religions, a refreshing change from other atheist reads.
