About this title: They were known as the Firefly Lane girls -- a single, inseparable unit. On the surface, they were as opposite as two people could be. The best friends promise to be there for each other forever -- and for thirty years, that promise holds strong. Then events and choices make that promise impossible. "I felt like the character Kate needed to develop a better self esteem at some point in the story.(which she never did) Specifically the troubles with her young daugther could have been addressed before she was a surly teen. At one point the daughter's clothing was described as inappropriate, but because it came from Aunt Tully, it was OK. In my opinion, as a mother, if someone close gave my kid (let's say words on the backside) clothes I wouldn't allow her to wear, I would speak up and say No-not OK!!!! It was sad that Tully and her mother never developed a healthier relationship. Yet the fact that Kate's mom and others in the story encouraging drinking alcohol and smoking pot as a coping strategy was very disappointing. In the end I realize that the story was about the frinedship of these two women, but I think Kate could've made other choices and left Tully to her career and then there would be no story. A fast read, less than five days, but not a book I'd rave about. I won't be able to attend the book club Monday, cuz I'm going to my dr for my cold."
"Living in Scotland, I had never heard of Kristin Hannah when I picked it up while visiting my family in Olympia, Washington. I was drawn to the story description of life-long friends between two women. As someone who gets together with a dozen friends from my college days in the 70s, every year for a "Girlfriend Break," it held meaning for me. It was a revelation when I started reading it to see that the two women not only grew up in the 70s, but in Seattle! I loved it, and hated to see it end in such a tragic way. I plan to recommend it to my sister, mom and all of those girlfriends of mine. I also look forward to reading another book by her."
"This was a mammoth of a book, but it flowed very nicely. It was very easy to read and to follow.
It covers the lifetime of a friendship between two very different girls. They meet in their early teens, just when gawky Kate is about to die of embarrassment, and wordly Tully is going to be wrapped up within her hollow friends. They essentially save each other from their lives- giving each a place to come "home" to and to feel like they belong. They go to college together, try to fall in love (though Kate is way more of a romantic than Tully is) and they learn to grow on their own, at times taking separate paths. Their thirties points out the major differences in their life paths, but they still have the ability to remain close friends- the "first phone call" as I call it (because no matter what the news, that friend is the first phone call that you make to relay the news).
At times, it felt like it was moving too quickly! It took nearly 600 pages to cover the "beginning" to the "end" of a close knit friendship between two women- but those 600 pages were expected to cover 30 YEARS of friendship! It sometimes felt like I knew Tully's personality, but never could quite "get" why the heck she was always so selfish. I mean, her upbringing, maybe- but you can't blame your adult life completely on your childhood. That's just bad planning. (though I'll admit I know some people who do live that way- searching for someone else to blame)
I also couldn't quite UNDERSTAND Kate's ability to forgive. I am as easy going as the next girl, and find it easy to give off my love, but three strikes, you're out!
Also, it seemed like Tully kept "swooping in" to save the day, but there wasn't really any kind of deep conversation. Once half the book was through, the storyline kind of grazed over the topics and then moved on. It felt a bit rushed. (I can't believe I'm saying this of a 600 page book)
And what HAPPENED between Marah and Kate? I know they're the "typical" teenage/ mom relationship, but I don't think I was EVER that bad! And when if I was, it was due to a major fallout- not being held back from a party. The fights didn't sit well with me. They didn't make sense. Anyone would be able to see that Kate was trying.
Though Firefly Lane was a beautiful story, I've only given it 3 stars because there are a bunch of things missing. There are also some gramatical errors that kept popping up all over the book- like the past vs. present tense. It was aggravating, but didn't detract too much from the story.
It was a very nice read... I just wanted a little something more. (Is that too much like Tully?) haha."
"I started and finished this book so quickly that I didn't even have time to add it to my currently reading section before I had finished. I loved this book. I see where people compare her to Jodi Picoult, however, I am starting to favor Kristen Hannah. It could be because I have only read two of her books and have read many of Jodi's, and also could have something to do with the fact that Picoult's most recent book which I happened to read right before Firefly Lane was a HUGE disappointment. Don't get me wrong I LOVE Jodi's books, but if it's your first book by her go with my sisters keeper. anyway, this book was amazing. The friendship between Tully and Kate was so strong and from the second I started reading not only could I not put it down, but I started questioning things about life and friendship and that sort of stuff. I would recommend this book to all! It has been a long time since I have read a book that made me cry, but the last chapter or two of this book I had trouble seeing the pages b/c of the tears welling in my eyes."
