Description: Bartoletti has taken one episode from her Newbery Honor Book "Hitler Youth" and fleshed it out into thought-provoking novel, telling the story of a 16-year-old German youth who dared to stand up against the Nazis. read more
"The story of Helmuth is definitely a sad and frustrating story; however, his strength and desire to do what's right is astounding. The most awe inspiring part is when he prays in his cell. Throughout his trials, he never blames anyone, but takes on the responsibility of his actions. He prays for deliverance in the story, but then continues to remember that his desires need to be aligned with heavenly Father's desires. All the while, he continues to say to himself, "Thy will be done."
I wish and hope that someday I can say that I've lived and acted for truth and not been afraid of doing what's right in the face of oppressors, no matter what those oppressors look like, be they human or otherwise. Helmuth's brother reminds him that even though the Nazi's are committing terrible atrocities, they are still God's children and He loves them. I am reminded so often of my short comings in this concept. So often I simply hate my enemies instead of praying for them to understand and have a desire to do what our heavenly Father wants us to do. I will continue praying to be better in this area."
"Helmuth is a pretty typical youth in Germany. He works hard at school. He has a great love for his country. He agrees with everyone around him that Germany was unfairly treated at the end of The Great War and he can see the potential that lies in the Nazi party to bring his beloved country back to greatness. One thing does separate him, though: he's a Mormon, a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. And as he grows older and as the Nazis rise in power, he begins to see a conflict arise in his heart between his love of his religion and the state's desire, nay, demand, for him to see Adolf Hitler as his only savior.
Events in Hamburg, both in the city as a whole and specific things that happen to people he love, make the teenage Helmuth begin to realize that something in his country has gone very wrong. And despite the vast machine of terror he is up against, Helmuth decides to take action -action that may very well cost him his life, but will help him to keep his faith and spirit intact.
What an amazing story this is, based on the actual life of Helmuth Heubener. Bartoletti has written it in such a powerful and yet, simplistic way. As a member of the Mormon church, I was incredibly impressed that she got the feel of our beliefs right, even the more specific cultural language felt authentic. And Germany - its landscape and food, the love of the Fatherland that runs deep within the veins of its citizens, she got it just right also. And despite the deeper nature of the story, she told it with care and sensitivity - I might venture to say that it's the perfect introduction to World War II literature for young adults, even as young as 10 or 11, if they are interested. Because even as horrible things are happening, Helmuth is a shining example of standing up when it comes time for a choice to be made - and that even when you aren't yet an adult, having peace in your heart because you've done what you know is right is worth sacrificing everything for."
"What I learned from this book that you should never be supportive to the enemy, and then you would be sent to jail like a boy named Adolf Hitler then he now knows to be supportive to his team. It's about a boy who dared it's based of the real Hitler youth. On the back of the book there is something about the author that I will put on this review, TOLD IN FLASHBACK, Newbery Honor Book author Susan Campbell Bartoletti magnificently explores the life of a heroic German youth who dared to stand up against the Nazi regime. As said in that text a heroic youth stands up against the Nazi regime. This book was the best book I have ever read in my life. The book is a German book that Adolf Hitler was in. I chose this book, because I thought it was a good book to read. On the back of the book again there is a saying that says, JUST AS THE NAZIS are rising to power, Helmuth Hubener, a German schoolboy, is caught up in all the swashbuckling bravado of his time. The handsome storm trooper uniforms, the shiny jackboots and armbands, the rousing patriotism- all serve to draw him into this bright new world full of promise and hope. There is a other saying on the back that says IN THE BEGINNING his patriotism is unwavering. But every day the rights of people all over Germany are diminishing. Jews are threatened and their businesses are being destroyed. The truth has been censored, and danger lurks everywhere. Anybody can turn on you. The world has turned upside down: p Patriotism means denouncing others, love means hate, and speaking out means treason. How much longer can Helmuth keep silent."
"It always amazes me how scared the Nazis were of people like 17-year old Helmuth and his friends. And how listening to a foreign radio station is a crime punishable by death. Helmuth's outrage of Hitler's oppression of freedom makes you realize just why the Nazis feared people like him, because they knew that people would start listening to Helmuth, and once they listened, they would stop fearing the Nazis and that would be the end of their power and oppression. An example of courage, faith, and selflessness to do what you know is right, to stand up against the wrong even if you are one voice amid many. I was first introduced to Helmuth in Three Against Hitler, an account by Helmuth's friend, Rudi Wobbe. Rudi's version is fascinating, especially for the LDS, as their faith plays a big role in the young men's lives. Bartoletti has obviously done great research about Helmuth and his experiences for this teen/school edition, and does a nice job of bringing his faith into the story, though I couldn't help but feel that part of the story was missing since I read Rudi's account. Bartoletti does, however, bring in much more of Helmuth's family life, and shows a very strong relationship between him and his brother Gerhard. She also includes photos and notes at the end of the story which leads me to think that she interviewed Gerhard a lot for his accounts."
