"In this fifth book of the Black Dagger Brotherhood series, we get to experience life (the past, present and occasional future) through V's eyes. And that's a good thing cause Vishous is an extremely intriguing character indeed. One with a very extensive, shocking - and often heart breaking- back story.
In my opinion the transition of the series from PNR to UF is already apparent in this book. The story is layered, told from many perspectives and the romance doesn't overshadow the action. And even though there were no Lessers in this book, there was a lot going on.
The highlights in this book to me were the male bonding scenes between Zsadist and John Matthew and between V and Butch. Especially the talks between V and Butch were very...endearing.
There were a few things I wasn't too happy with (besides the fact that an emotionally numb person like V fell in love so quickly, but I'm blaming it on the cardiac trauma) ....
*spoiler alert*
My biggest problem was the deus ex machina Ward pulled at the end. Really: wasn't there any other way to give V his HEA? The author shows she can plan well ahead by the overarching story lines she gives us, but with this it seems she was grasping at straws (and got a hold of the wrong one). It just doesn't feel right and I can't imagine it looking right either. V deserved more than this.
Second, there were no lessers in this book, AT ALL, except at the very final moment when they do something very critical. What?!? Where did that come from? Again: the straw thing...
Third: I was a bit disappointed with the sex scenes in the book. Since we were talking about V, I was expecting some very hot scenes. Or some very tender romantic ones as a contrast. And sure: we got one really hot (bathroom) scene. But that was about it. The rest of the love scenes were more mentioned than described. Truly a waste. And really: I wouldn't have mind if Ward had let V and Butch have some quality time in the bedroom! But alas.. she wouldn't go there. And I guess it's out of the question for the future. Ah well...
Still, overall Lover Unbound was very entertaining. A solid 4 stars."
Two years ago when I first read this book it was quite a disappointment to me as compared to books 1, 2 & 3. I wanted to give it another whirl before reading Phury's book for the first time.
V has been a big favorite for me among the amazing Brothers in J.R. Ward's world. From his characterization in past books and what we learn about him in book 5, for me he's just too hard-core (in many ways) to fall so quickly for anyone.
Jane the ultra-competent trauma surgeon stands up to V and is no shrinking violet when they first meet. But Ward has painted V as so cold, so aloof, with such iron control over his emotions that I just can't buy him falling for someone so quickly. And I wasn't feeling much depth of chemistry between V and Jane.
I'm disappointed also that Ward totally chickened out with a Jane/V romance, instead of giving V the HEA with his *real* love. And I completely didn't buy that V suddenly accepted just friendship with his *real* love.
I think I'm the only person on the planet who enjoys the lesser story line. I missed the action, the fighting, and the suspense of what the lessers were up to, and the intrigue within the lesser organization.
I got a much clearer picture on this second read of Quinn, Blay, & Xhex. Same with the sudden expanding story lines involving The Chosen, The Scribe Virgin, the Directrix and Payne."
"This is the story of Vishous, the sexually confused kinkster-vampire with bad boy tattoos and a funky, magic hand. Vishous is my favorite member of the Black Dagger Brotherhood. In Lover Unbound, all hints of Vishous' sexual orientation, (and more specifically, his feelings toward Butch) are done away with and truth "comes out", so to speak. Personally, I was shocked... but what's a vampire story without some bisexual undertones? I eventually found myself rooting for the forbidden union and on some level even hoped that J.R. Ward would just "off" Butch's shellan, Marissa, so that the two males could happily ever after live out thier thier alternative lifestyles together. But it was not to be... Butch insists on loving that virginal drip Marissa, leaving Vishous with a cold heart (and a warm set of spanking devices). Then, after a nasty encounter with a lesser, Vishous is hospitalized, where he meets and falls in love with his woman-doctor Jane, his love for Butch now unrealistically forgotten. Jane is another one of J.R. Wards female drones, whose only purpose, as far as I can tell, is to validate the Brotherhoods over-the-top sense of nobility and confirm thier sexual orientations. But still, I loved this story... right up until the end that is... I have to admit that the surprise twist was layered a bit too thick with cheesy convenience even for me. I finished the book uncertain of whether I had just read a vampire tale... but what the heel, it's fiction. The writr can do whatever he or she wants. I give this book four stars because, despite it's faults, I care about these characters and feel compelled to continue with the series. Which, as far as I am concerned, is proof that a writer is definately doing something right!"
