"The premise was great, and the setting was compelling, but as with so many books lately, the ending was a serious disappointment. It was contrived and sensationalized, and it fell terribly flat."
"I had a good time with this one. It's a historical novel set in Philadelphia in 1889. Well written with a lot of good period detail. What really made it fun was we were in Philadelphia while I was reading the book and visited a lot of the places mentioned."
"pretty good. well written. lots of interesting info about 19th century american medicine and philly's contributions. not so much "murder mystery" as i had anticipated. the main character was a little to moral and righteous for me though."
"I tend to read forewords and author's notes, etc. before I getting down to reading the book itself and the latter here contained a spoiler that gave away much of the mystery for me. I enjoyed the period setting and info on the history of medical developments. A nice look at upper class privilege vs poverty's powerlessness; honor within the underworld vs corruption among those with power and influence. The parts dealing with the underworld had the most life- the medical got a tad boring at times as did the romantic aside that went nowhere. OK, but not fantastic."
