"I picked up this book solely because I liked the cover, which makes sense because it was written by an artist (unfortunately goodreads doesn't have the cover of this book that I read).
I can't decide at all what I thought of it. It was the story of an art major's first year at college. Some parts I loved and some parts I hated. I really liked the projects that the graphic design professor had the students do and seeing what they all came up with. Quite clever. However, I agree with other reviews of this book, the last 50 pages or so were just crazy and didn't fit at all with the rest of the book. I felt like I was just starting to get to know the characters and become involved in the story when all of the sudden everything went completely crazy. I felt like it was a dream or something. I was also weirded out that this was supposed to take place in the 50s. Nothing about it seemed like the 50s to me at all.
Christina - I really think you should read this book. It made me think of you a lot. I think you would get a lot more of it than I did, being an art major and all and I think you would appreciate the graphic design class...until everything goes crazy and falls apart at the end, of course. And it's a quick read, I read it in two days, so you can probably read it in an hour. :)"
"About a male Freshman Art Student in the 1950's taking one of the first Graphic Design courses offered at a Pennsylvania college with a professor who is the equivalent of Simon Cowell. Although it was based in the '50s, it took me back to some of those same freshman year feelings as a music major. The fact that I'm interested in graphic design didn't hurt either, oh yeah, and I caught all of those PA references in the book. Also, I figured out what a 'cheese monkey' is, and that makes the book an instant classic to me. I HIGHLY recommend this book to any adult with a background/interest in the arts."
"I really enjoyed this book. I feel like I shouldn't have, but I did. What did it for me was that the character who was supposed to be endlessly cool and superior was shown throughout the novel to be a complete fake with no ability to take criticism or face a challenge. The sad puppy that was the southern girl was a wonderful character to follow and pity, kind of like a three-legged dog trying to dig a hole. You feel bad for it, but when it digs that hole, you know the triumph is bigger than it would have been had the dog had four legs. And anyone who knows me knows I love three-legged dogs."
"Chip Kidd is well-respected as a designer of book jackets, I learned from the book jacket, and this is the first novel he's written, about being an art major at State U in the fifties. The comfortable plot is chugging along smoothly then seems to self-destruct on purpose in the last fifty or seventy-five pages, as if he had to finish at a certain time and was running late or something. I think this could be a whole new postmodern motif well worth exoploring, but in this case it seems to occur accidentally. Good people turn evil and the whole thing implodes very quickly. I think it should have been longer and that it lacked some essential plot wrinkle to serve as a bridge from the positive to the negative. Kidd also designed the jacket."
