"This book ruled my life for over a year. I found it online about a week before it was coming down off the internet to prepare for it's reprinting. I got about three chapters from the end when it was taken down and was forced to wait until the release of the new edition, exactly 364 days later.
And honestly, after waiting almost a year to re-read and finish this book, I can tell you that it was completely worth it.
This is one of the best novels I've ever read. It's captivating, poignant, intelligent, hilarious, and most of all, innappropriate in ways you've never imagined. My life would not be the same without it."
"I fell in love with this book after finishing the eighth paragraph. It's a horror novel with a protagonist so hilarious the soy sauce I had for dinner is churning in my stomach and threatening to spew forth in a black bile of jealousy because I'm NOT David Wong! That's not even his name. The book probably isn't for everyone (although I think it should be) but if you love horror combined with sick and twisted humor, you'll love this book."
"Here's the thing. David Wong started the story as a little one shot back around Halloween, 2001. He then kept writing little pieces each Halloween, until he manned up and created a whole novel. Trouble is, those first few chapters are his early work and it shows. There's some shiny ideas, but they would have worked better as "bonus features" in an appendix in the back, instead of upfront where everyone sees the faults. That said, the last half of the book is solid."
"To give this book four stars, just as I did for Caputo's The Voyage or Chute's Beans of Egypt, Maine, just doesn't seem right, but this book is great in a totally different, uncomparable way. I picked it up as a guilty pleasure, wasn't even sure I'd admit to reading it here, but I did anyway, and I don't care what you think...this book rocked my world! I can't say I was scared, but I was certainly unnerved, at the same time snorting with laughter. It all worked cuz this author happens to be smart, smarter than me, and the penis jokes helped lighten the mood when I started to feel too stupid to keep up. Home alone today, I checked out the website, and, yeah, that totally freaked me out. Subliminal photos flashed over creepy kids in clown make-up freaks me the hell out. Here's to reading a full month of creepy Halloween reads; this one's a great place to start!"
