"When Deborah's daughter Grace is driving during a rainstorm, she hits a man who suddenly appears in front of her car. Deborah, the passenger, allows the police to believe she was driving, setting in motion a chain of events that do no one, not even Grace, any good.
Zippy, polished commercial women's fiction. This is the first book I read on my Reader, and it was perfectly suited for it--the characters were well defined enough that I kept everyone straight (a big bonus since it's not easy to flip back a few pages to the last time I saw someone's name), and it relied on dialogue to keep the plot moving forward."
"I'd give it 3 1/2 stars. This is the first book I have read of hers. It reminded me a little bit of Jodi Picoult--but not as much depth. At first I was worried that I wasn't going to really relate to the characters because there was a lot of dialogue and the characters seemed slightly flat. But as it developed I did feel like I knew them better. The story is about a mother and daughter who hit a man while driving home in a horrible rain storm. The 15 year old daughter is driving on her permit and the mom covers for her and said she was. So the story unfolds as they both cover up secrets about that night. It was a very quick read and I found I couldn't put it down."
"If you like Jodi Picoult - this book is very similar to her work.
The book was quick and makes you think about what YOU would do for your child, if you had the option. Would you take the blame for something with legal implications to protect your daughter from a life of potential future issues, wrong-turns and judgement? Think about it.
The mother / dead-guy's brother relationship was just weird... I mean, where did that come from????"
"Bought this in the airport bookstore on Sunday (btw, IAH Terminal A has an awfully slim book selection) and finished it that night. It bugs me when I finish a book that fast, but there was a longer-than-planned flight and a night alone in a hotel room involved so I couldn't really stretch it out any longer. It was an okay read, but nothing special. I found the romance in the book -- yes, oddly, there is one -- wholly unbelievable, to the point that it pretty much ruined the book for me. On the other hand, the main character's journey to the realization that it isn't a gift to protect your child from their own life did resonate with me. I didn't/wouldn't go as far as the mother in this book did, but I can definitely relate because I've been on that journey myself. Oh, who am I kidding, I'm still on that journey...which of course is what made me buy the book in the first place over the few others that looked inviting. So I'm glad I read it, but I can't say I'd recommend it too highly."
