"Generally an entertaining read, and the romance is nice, but it's not anything extraordinary. maybe i've read too many romance novels, but it seemed like the plot was just too familiar, too simple, too formulaic. i.e.: Girl doesn't like boy. Boy doesn't like girl. They are thrown together against their will. But soon they change their minds and fall into deep, heartwrenching love very quickly without any clear reason or event that would make them change their minds. I think this would make a good casual read - it's an easy read and has a comfortably happy ending. But if you're looking for something deep and/or complicated, not the book for you."
"Throughout her acclaimed writing career, Julie Garwood has captivated readers with characters who are compelling, daring, and bursting with life. Now one of the most popular novelists of our time proudly returns to her beloved historical romance roots-in a thrilling tale of love, murder, adventure, and mystery set against the haunting landscape of medieval Scotland. For Princess Gabrielle of St. Biel, Scotland is a land of stunning vistas, wild chieftains, treacherous glens, and steep shadows-skullduggery, betrayal, and now murder. Prized for her exquisite beauty, the daughter of one of England's most influential barons, Gabrielle is also a perfect bargaining chip for a king who needs peace in the Highlands: King John has arranged Gabrielle's marriage to a good and gentle laird. But this marriage will never take place. For Gabrielle, everything changes in one last burst of freedom-when she and her guards come upon a scene of unimaginable cruelty. With one shot from her bow and arrow, Gabrielle takes a life, saves a life, and begins a war. Within days, the Highlands are aflame with passions as a battle royal flares between enemies old and new. Having come to Scotland to be married, Gabrielle is instead entangled in Highland intrigue. For two sadistic noblemen, underestimating Gabrielle's bravery and prowess may prove fatal. But thanks to a secret Gabrielle possesses, Colm MacHugh, the most feared man in Scotland, finds a new cause for courage. Under his penetrating gaze, neither Gabrielle's body nor heart is safe. A gripping novel that delves into the heart of emotions-unyielding passions of love, hate, revenge, and rawdesire-Shadow Music is magnificent gift from Julie Garwood and a crowning achievement in her amazing career. *4/5. This was my first audio book and I loved listening to the dialect and accent of the speaker. It made for a relaxing and soothing rest in the afternoon to listen to this romantic novel."
""Shadow Music" by Julie Garwood (from inside flap)
As we're swept back to the Scotland of old, Gabrielle, the last of her royal line, has just been betrothed to a stranger by King John himself. But once she meets Colm MacHugh, no other man will do.
Against a landscape of vast castles and bloody battlefields, Colm and Gabrielle defy danger for a love as passionate as it is forbidden. For Colm is a fearsome warrior in possession of a powerful secret his enemies will do anything to possess.
It has been a few years since I have read any of Julie Garwood's books. And I don't know why! This book reminded me how much I like her books. She is a very descriptive writer and takes you along on the journey as if you are there! Gabrielle is a very stubborn, independent person. Raised by her mother and father, she can take care of herself, well most of the time. If not, she has 4 guards that have been with her since her birth that will help her out. Colm is a very strong and contradictory person. He and Gabrielle have lots of disagreements on how Colm wants her to behave while staying at his keep. Colm is protecting her from two ruthless and dishonorable noblemen, who want Gabrielle for the supposed secret she holds of her mother's homeland."
"I've enjoyed all of Julie Garwood's books, but Shadow Music is my favorite. I love Gabrielle. She's an exceptionally strong yet very humble heroine, and I especially loved her guardians. I enjoy Garwood's sense of humor and was especially entertained with this story."
