"This book is presented as a triumph against atheists and atheism. The main thrust of (apparently) prominent ex-atheist Flew for his argument is to re-present old 'proofs' for the existence of god which have not really sustained criticism over the years, together with a more recent attempt deriving from the field of quantum mechanics - a stance enamoured by those scientists who want to believe at least in some 'mind' to explain their mathematically defined quantum universe. Such a 'mind', of course, is nowhere near the concept of a god spoken of in religion, but that apparently does not stop them letting people think that there might be such a mind. Thus, to them, it appears 'reasonable' that such a mind should exist.
Unfortunately, reasonableness in itself is no proof of the truth of an argument. I'm sure, taking just one example, that for many centuries the Ptolemaic system with the earth as the stable centre of the universe was also considered to be 'reasonable'. The argument of this book then makes a series of unwarranted existential and ontological leaps: since it is 'reasonable' for there to be a god, therefore god exists; and therefore it is also reasonable that such a god could 'reveal' himself to mankind; and that of the possible revelations made to mankind, then the Judaeo-Christian one is the most appropriate... Apart from the fact that there would be numerous religious organisations that would beg to differ with the final conclusion, none of the arguments presented constitute anything like proof.
Flew can certainly change his mind about what he believes: he is quite free to do as he wishes. What I find unconscionable, however, is that the main text is preceded by an Introduction and followed by two Appendices, all written by Christians with an agenda. These extra 'comments' have the effect of ensconcing Flew's text within a Christian context as if his stance required some special protection. All they are protecting, in any case, are 'arguments' which do not prove anything; so the book is a sham.
The text is easy enough to read; but the claim made by the book is an empty one."
"I had heard bits of Professor Flew's infamous change of mind, from atheism to theism. The book purchase was an impulse buy, though, when I saw it at one of our local bookshops.
I was eager to read Flew's story. After the introduction, I was ready to gobble the pages up. Unfortunately, about midway, I realized I was going to be disappointed. I expected an emphasis on narrative, the story of Flew's wrestling. I wanted to hear the angst and hear him tell the stories of what it was like to be a headliner in so many well known philosophical debates. I wanted to know why he had changed his mind, for sure, but I wanted it set in the context of his life, who he was as a man.
Rather, Flew intended to write a book that skimmed the surface of his philosophical change of heart. He quotes a lot of people (too many for my taste) and he gives a broad sketch for why, after more than half a decade leading the charge in one direction, he did an about face. It's interesting, even helpful (though I doubt it is beefy enough to change many people's mind). It just wasn't worth $22.
Flew describes his journey in words that explain why I found little resonance with this book (and, truthfully, little resonance with his overarching bent in religious matters): "In short, my discovery of the Divine has been a pilgrimage of reason and not of faith." When speaking of belief in God, I'm (for the most part) happy however one happens to land there. However, some paths are more beautiful than others.
Rather, I wish Flew would have sunk more deeply into the words he quoted from Frederick Copleston: "I do not think that it can be justifiably demanded of the human mind that it should be able to pin down God like a butterfly in a showcase.""
"Not a christian apologetic, but a very interesting philosophical discussion on the reasons that highest level current thinking directs us to the existence of God. Not a really easy read, but worth the effort, overall, i think"
