"A mediocre short story and two excellent novellas. I like Lord John exceedingly well, his private life and his public face both, and I love the way the mystery genre combines with the historical and a touch of romance to create such compelling stories.
What I admire and enjoy most about both the first two stories here and the two novels is the way in which Lord John's homosexuality provides him with both unique problems and unique windows on the problems of others. His nature is an essential part of all of the stories about him (save the last, The Haunted Soldier) and not gratuitous or unimportant.
But I agree with a friend who wrote in her review that she hopes that Gabaldon allows Lord John to get over his crush on Jamie Fraser. Before I started reading the Outlander series, I thought it weird and inexplicable (based on the bit of Fraser we see in this series); now I see it as inevitably doomed. Lord John deserves to love someone who is capable of loving him, and damn, I hope she gives him that. Eventually.
Finally, if you do choose to read this series, I totally recommend the audiobook versions, because, mmmm Jeff Woodman's voice."
"I love Diana Gabaldon and I especially enjoy the Lord John spinoffs. That having been said, I feel this book is a bit of a muddle. It's actually three shorter books, including a short story I'd already read. The packaging of these shorter stories together is complicated by the fact it also mixes in with the timeline of other already published books. Though the stories do stand alone, as a reader of her main series (sometimes called the Outlander series) I had a hard time keeping things straight and not going back and forth trying to figure out where this fit in the overall timeline of Lord John. I'd love to see her re-release all of the LJ stories individually, so I could be certain I was taking them in order. But, on the whole, nice tasty bites of a character I quite enjoy. More of grubby old London, intrigue in the British countryside, and a smattering of German warfare for good measure. I always recommend these books. Warning: contains manlove, so if that doesn't work for you, best turn away now. :-)"
"As I love Diana Gabaldon's writing (esp. the Outlander series), I was a surprised to be somewhat disappointed in this book. It's more of a collection of three 'novella's', two of which I swear I had read before in another of her books.
I'm not a fan of short stories or novella's (call them what you will), never have been. I like a big book I can sink my teeth into for awhile so I can become closely acquainted with the characters therein. I found I just didn't care all that much about the characters in these stories, although I like John Grey from the Outlander Series.
I guess I should be more careful when buying a book, and not assume that I'll like absolutely everything a favorite author writes!"
"This book is a short story and two novellas that should be read in chronological context because there are frequent references to characters and events that happen to Lord John in Gabaldon's Outlander series where the character first appears, and in the full-length novels about Lord John. A major element of Lord John, the ways he is written and the various challenges he must negotiate, deal with his sexuality, which was confusing in the first story, but became clearer in the final two tales. For an 18th-century British army officer and aristocrat being homosexual presents very particular challenges that are culturally interesting, but not always comfortable reading if for no other reason that when it comes to sexual attraction and romance I like to live a little vicariously and I just can't relate. The final of the three stories is by far the best and I became drawn to Lord John, his humanity and vulnerability in a way that has made me want to read more, though the title is highly misleading."
