"Rachel Morgan's very first kick-ass-adventure is a must for fans of course. The novella covers about a quarter of the pages and is set in Rachel's pre-IS-time. Still frail from the Rosewood-Syndrome symptoms, 18-year-old, fresh-from-school Rachel is determined to enter the Inderland Security instead of completing her earthwitch studies at the university of her brother's choice. Rachel raises a cute 150-year-old ghost from purgatory and helps him to kick some vampire ass. Ms Harrison managed to make Rachel be Rachel - yet depicts her believably younger, less self-secure, less experienced. 4 Stars! The second story "Run, Run Rudolph" by Lyndsay Sands is rather a romance story with a supernatural twist. A crazy scientist zaps the heroine with a machine that turns her into a shape-shifter and tries to hunt her down for scientific experiments. The flight which involves a lot of shape-shifting and groping gets her nearer to the man of her dreams. To much chick-lit. Not quite my cup of tea. 2 Stars. The third one, "Six" by Marjorie M. Liu, brings together a tough martial-arts-trained Chinese secret agent searching for terrorists and a necromancer hunting vampires in Shanghai. It was fun, thrilling, with a touch of heart and a touch of sci-fi - I liked it. 4 Stars. The last, "The Harvest", written by Vicki Petterson follows Zoe, human-turned Agent of Light, as she tries to hide her new-born granddaughter from the Agents of Shadows. I did not finish this and will cancel books by this author from my wish list. Did not hook my attention."
"An early story of Rachel Morgan from Kim Harrison. Lynsay Sands story of a shape-shifter. Marjorie M Liu's story of a government agent and a hunky necromancer and Vicki Pettersson's story of a Zodiac Warrior all combine to create an interesting selection of Christmas and Thanksgiving stories. Light and fun for distraction over the Holiday Season and interesting for some side stories within several worlds. Nothing terribly standout but interesting. ("
"I give this 3.5 just for the Vicki Pettersson story. Which is the only one I am going to talk about.
I HIGHLY suggest reading this short BEFORE moving on to book 3 of her Signs of the Zodiac series, even though it is technically a prequel.
It is pretty integral to the series. Gives us a huge amount of background information that I know I very much needed as a reader. And over all the story is very cool. ***SPOILERS BELOW****
The story is about Zoe Archer, right after her daughter Joanna's rape. Zoe is an ex-superhero of 'The Light' side of the zodiac, sign of Sagittarius. She has been immortalized in the Shadow & Light comic books as one of the fiercest warriors of The Light & in this short story, you get a huge insight as to why. To be blunt, she is a fearless bad ass in the most genuine way.
You find out why the Tulpa sent Joaquin (Shadow sign of Aquarius) to rape Jo in the 1st place (in fact - his 1st target was actually Oliva, Jo's sister. Jo protected her & bore the brunt) & it's b'c he actually thought Jo/Olivia was Zoe in disguise. The piece of info - I very much needed! I was previously having plot gap troubles & this resolved many of them for me.
Zoe soon gives up her immortal life to save/protect her daughter & goes back to The Tulpa's lair in order to rescue her grandchild, who was kidnapped by Tulpa. Ironically - the Tulpa didn't realize it was his grandchild. She just happened to be one of the children he kidnapped b'c he had begun taking infant's that were being given up for adoption. Grooming them to worship him so he would live forever.
You see in this world - you exist & continue to exist by the power of one's or a collective of thoughts. The Tulpa was a manifestation of his creator's thoughts. If the Tulpa is not remembered....if his story is not told through the generations or believed in - he will cease to exist. Hence grooming the children to worship him from infancy.
The narrative of this short story is told very much like a comic book. It has a 3rd person narrative very much in the same vein as the TV show 'HEROES'. I loved the way VP pulled back from the scene to give us an overall insight into things via a narrator's voice. I thought it was brilliantly executed.
Over all VP's series is very good. It's darker & more adult (not sex wise but in tone) than most Paranormal series. It's complicated & actually is very existential but not pretentious or boring. It continually has genuinely surprising plot twists & the thought behind everything is seriously clever.
What I love is that she doesn't hammer you over the head with foreshadowing & just let's the story unfold so majority of the time you are truly surprised.
The 1st book I put down b'c I was having plot issues & felt it was long winded in parts. However - I asked a book buddy of mind to read it b'c I really felt VP had a lot of talent there & maybe I was interpreting wrong. She encouraged me to pick it back up b'c it went from being a C-list series to an A list for her. I'm glad a did.
The 1st 2 books, I felt VP needed a better editor b'c they were too long & long winded in places. I have only just begun 3 but my reading buddy assures me that the 3rd installment the series starts to get really good & the editing is a bit better & the 4th is actually right on the money lengthwise.
If you pick up the series - I recommend you skimming the descriptive parts of Las Vegas itself. It'll help."
"I only read the first story by Kim Harrison in this book so I could prepare for Book 7 of the Hallows series. Although I may go back and read the Lyndsay Sands piece, her books sound interesting.
Finding out about Rachel's past was very mind-opening. I knew she was sick as a child but I had no idea how affected she was, as late as 18 years-old. It really explains where she got her drive to always push harder and longer to succed. And you can also see the beginnings of how powerful she is going to be, and how good at her job. Her skills as a quick thinker and able to stay calm in hectic situations shine through. Even her little spark with Pierce shows a bit of her to come, intrigued by someone she can't (or shouldn't)have.
Also was great to see Robbie and how he fit into Rachel's life. I expect we will see some of him in book #7 now that Rachel knows the truth about her birth father.
Will be interesting to see how this new insight works into the next book of the series, her relationship with her mother and how she handles being a student of a demon.
