"I just finished Halfway to the Grave and will read Night Huntress, #2. With that said, The reason this book got 2 stars is because I didn't like Cat and Bones was too perfect. Now nothing is wrong with perfect, it's just, this vampire has no flaws at all. He only kills bad people. He loves Cat and pursues her even though I don't see any reason why he likes her. I didn't like Cat's decisions and loathed her mother.
I think there was a quote in there that said something to the sorts or her mother cannot help hating all vampires because of what happened to her as much as Cat can hate being born. It's not an exact quote but you get the idea. I think thats not true. You can help hating a group versus the one who wronged you.
Also, her mother was so selfish. She couldn't even pretend for her daughter. I got the idea that all her mother cared about was getting rid of vampires. Her daughters happiness was not considered.
Bones. Bones is too perfect. He's the everyman. I like him. He's the only one in the book I liked, but not loved.
The story got really interesting to me towards the end and her leaving Bones makes me want to see what will happen."
Oh My God! Thanks to Mandi at Smexy Books I decided to check out the Night Huntress Series by Jeaniene Frost. I just read the first installment, Halfway to the Grave. This is a paranormal romance series about vampires, and Holy Mother! I am in love!!!!! I am in love with this author, I am in love with Bones the vampire, and I am totally digging the snarky first person heroine of this story, Cat, even though I sometimes have difficulty with snarky first person heroines. But not this time. This time it works like a charm.
I sucked this book down like a pint of blood. Okay, so here's why I think Jeaniene Frost is amazing...first of all, her name is cool. Second, the pacing of this book is fierce...could not put it down. Third, the love story totally works. You feel for Cat who is struggling with her identity (she is half-vampire) and her attraction to Bones, a full vampire who has coerced her into helping him snag baddie vamps. You also are rooting for Bones, who is obviously falling in love with Cat, but understands where her trepidation is coming from. Fourth, Frost's paranormal world has some new twists that make it interesting, especially after reading 10,000 vampire books (these vamps can walk in sunlight, for example). Fifth, all of the characters in this book are fascinating, the good, the bad, the undead moonshine-loving ghouls. Sixth, the final climatic scene in which Bones rescues Cat from the FBI guys rocks out! Explosions! Shattering glass! Bones walking down the middle of the highway like an avenging angel! Oh yeah!
Other bonuses: The blood and guts stuff was not overly disturbing (you know me, weak stomach, etc. etc.). Also, the cover is very sexy (as are the other covers for this series). Nice. And the mix of ass-kicking, conflict/plot and sexual tension is perfectly balanced. I am seriously impressed with this author. She has got it going on.
My only beef (pun intended) was that I wish there had been more sex scenes, because Bones and Cat together are combustible-hot!
Bones is freaking fantastic...he just jumped to the number one spot for best hero of 2009....his sarcastic, sexy, English vampire is completely addictive. Of course, I am about to order the whole rest of this series from Amazon and devour it like a blood-sucking fiend. For any of you paranormal romance fans, I cannot recommend this book highly enough. "Excellent book! I enjoyed this book right from the first chapter. Good plot, lots of action, and good characters. Ummm Bones, need, I say more. He is one of those characters that is easy to love, and you are attached to them the minute they are introduced. I adored Cat also. Bones and her are perfect for each other. The one thing that I didn't get was the fact that Cat's mother and Grandparents seem to be alright with her secret pastime. No matter what happened to Cat's mother at the hands of a vampire. What mother figure would let their loved one seek revenge like this? The situation is very admirable, but unlikely, especially with Cat being so young. Halfway to the Grave is Jeaniene Frost's debut novel, and the first in the Night Huntress Series. The second book in the series, which I cannot wait to read, is One Foot in the Grave....I so wish I had it, so I could start it right now."
"Although the spine indicates this books as a paranormal romance, I feel that it was more a kick-butt, fiction, with a dose of romance. The romance was NOT the main focus of the book, but a nice addition. Very mild steam, not graphic. However, the action scenes were graphic and gory.
Enjoyed the humor! A lot of laugh-out-loud moments and cute one-liners. :-) The h/h made a good team. Catherine Kathleen Crawford "Cat" was half vampire/human and due to her mother's prejudice for all vampires became a vampire killer. When she crossed paths with Bones (Crispin Phillip Arthur Russell III) she discovers a) all vampires are not bad, and b) there are other "things" in the world besides vampires.
The end of the book sets up the rest of the series and I am looking forward to reading it. A word to those who like a HEA (Happily Ever After), this book does not end...
