"This book, "Ranger's Apprentice The Icebound Land" by John Flanagan is the third book in the series "Ranger's Aprrentice". After getting capturesd by the Skandians, the main character Will and the princess named Cassandra, but called Evalyn because she disguises her identity. The two were captured after burning the bridge during a war to stop their enemies, and the consequence was being captured. In the new and foreign land of Skandia, the two became slaves for a good year. This book by Flanagan is like a rubber band with its tension constantly rising and keeping me like "addicted" to the series. He does a really good job in doing so, too."
"The third book in "The Ranger's Apprentice" series deals with two separate storylines: the abduction to Skandia of the king's daughter Evanlyn/Cassandra and the ranger's apprentice Will as well as the story of Will's mentor ranger, Halt, and Will's comrade-in-arms, Horace, as they travel to Skandia to find Will but end up stuck in Gallica with an evil knight. The attention to battle detail in the second storyline is excellent. The book does not shy away from brutality without concentrating on gore and depravity. In Skandia, the slave world is well-limned and the escape of Will and Evanlyn is dramatic. I liked the willingness to deal with issues of addiction."
"The book surprised me. It was so cliche in the first book, although exciting, that I thought the series would be a constant string of scary guys being conquered by the amazing Rangers. The end of the 2nd book and now this book went in an unexpected direction and followed a more creative story arc.
Halt is still so mysteriously perfect, la, la, la, but I really enjoyed Will and Evanlyn's side of the storyline with its interesting side characters, depiction of Skandia, and fun if slightly too dramatic twists. The Horace/Halt plot is decent too, and the book is the best of the series so far. It may move a little slowly for junior high age readers, but if they already like the characters, it won't be a problem."
"I'm really disappointed in this 3rd book of the Ranger's series. The writing is excellent still, and there is plenty of good story and adventure. I just don't like the turn of things. The series is the Ranger's Apprentice, right? And yet the ranger and the apprentice don't spend a single second together through this whole book. There's no apprenticeship going on. Why???? My heart just isn't behind the way the story went. And another cliffhanger ending....aargh! Me and my I-want-everything-to-be-wrapped-up-and-tied-with-a-neat-little-bow thinking just can't handle this with any grace. But of course I will read on to see what happens next."
