"This is a book that draws the reader in page by page. It is the story of Nick Freestone and his father, a teak plantation owner in Burma (Myanmar). Set against the backdrop of World War II, Nick is sent by his mother and stepfather to his father's plantation when the bombing in London comes a little too close to home. The plantation harvests timber using elephants. Hannibal is the largest and most unruly of the elephants. Mya, is a young Burmese girl whose family has a long and storied tradition of being mahouts, or the elephant caretakers (handlers, trainers, drivers). She yearns to become a mahout but will never be allowed to do so because she is female, although her family supports her dream. Unfortunately, the situation is Burma is unraveling too as the Japanese plan to occupy the British owned colony. The Burmese think the Japanese might grant their desire for independence and many agree to help the Japanese in the takeover. Nick's father is taken as a prisoner of war and Nick is held captive in the plantation's manor house. The manor house is transformed into a military headquarters. With the aid of Mya's great grandfather, a revered monk and mahout, Nick and Mya escape and begin a perilous journey toward freedom frought with danger and certain death if they are captured. Definitely a thrilling page turner with lots of history woven through the narrative."
""Elephant Run" by Roland Smith (from the back cover) The year is 1941, and bombs are being dropped from the night sky, blanketing the city of London. When fourteen-year old Nick Freestone's apartment is demolished, his mother decides the situation in England has grown too unstable, Nick will be safer, his mother hopes, living with his father in Burma on the family's teak plantation. Nick arrives at the plantation eager to learn about the timber elephants raised and trained there, and also to spend time with his father. But before he can settle in, trouble erupts in the remote Burmese village. Japanese soldiers invade, and Nick's father is taken prisoner. Nick is stranded, forced to work as a servant to the new rulers. As life in the village grows more dangerous for Nick and his young friend, Mya, they plan their daring escape, determined to rescue their families. But to succeed, they will have to brave not only the threat of enemy soldiers, but the dangers of their wilderness journey.
This is a book I bought at our school book fair a couple of months ago. I will admit the book cover grabbed me before I even read the back cover. This is wonderful book filled with lots of history about elephants and their mahouts, their trainers. While Nick and Mya have to do what the Japanese solilders tell them, they have a family member, Mya's Great Grandfather, to help them out. He is a priest and is not harmed and allowed free rein of the Freestone plantation. He also knows where the secret tunnels under the house are and how to get to them. He leads Nick and Mya across the jungle to get Mya's brother and Nick's father out of the camps."
"3 1/2 stars. A 2010 Rebecca Caudill selection The Japanese invasion of Asia seems to be a little explored topic in kid's lit, making this an important book to add to the collection of WWII historical fiction titles for kids.
Burma is the unique setting of this story which takes place just as the Japanese are invading the country. All the elements are here for a great adventure. There are interesting characters, including elephants. There is the exotic setting on a teak plantation set in the middle of dangerous jungle. There is the brutal invading enemy and the capture of innocent civilians. There are daring escapes...
This book has some plotting issues, however. The story frequently changes direction much too abruptly, causing this reader to occasionally flip backwards thru the pages wondering if some crucial detail had been missed. And the story gets politically complex at times=>would life under the Japanese would be better or worse than life under British Colonial rule? A map of southern Asia would have been a very helpful to this book. For these reasons, some wartime violence and some very subtle sexual references, I think this book would be best suited for very mature 5th graders and older."
"Bombs explode nightly in London, dropped by German warplanes. Nick goes to live on his father's idyllic plantation in Burma to escape the destruction of World War II, but just days after his arrival the Japanese invade. The British and Burmans alike are imprisoned by the Japanese. Nick conspires with the local mahouts (elephant trainers) to escape. Aiding their perilous adventure is Hannibal, a magnificent bull elephant who no longer trusts humans.
I was expecting fast-paced action and instead got more deliberate-paced hiding and plotting, but it's a good book nonetheless."
