"The Wheel of Darkness, by Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child
Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child have written another exciting, spellbinding and upsetting book, one that I didn't want to put down from the beginning to the end. It was interesting engaging. Special agent Pendergast of the FBI and his ward, Constance Green are weary of the world after their last upsetting adventures, and go to a Tibetan Monastery to be healed. But someone has stolen the dangers Agogen which could destroy the world, and the monks ask Pendergast to retrieve it. A simple assignment, it seems, until the thief is murdered and additional strange bizarre murders begin to occur about the maiden voyage of the huge cruise ship Britannica. I enjoyed the book, and was very interested int he meditative practices, but I was deeply saddened by a change that occurred in this book from all previous books. In every other book, I coudl trust two things: that at least Pendergast would survive and that whatever bizarre happening was occurring, their would be a logical explanation for it in the end. However, I began to suspect that that would not be the case in this book, and, disappointingly, I was correct. This means I can never trust them again to not go off the deep end."
"The story begins as Special Agent Aloysius Pendergast and his young side-kick, Constance Greene, climb a perilous Himalayan mountain path to an ancient Tibetan monastery where the monks need some help. Their inner sanctum has been violated and a dangerous treasure has been stolen. The artefact must be recovered before it wreaks havoc on the human race.
The trail takes the agents on a maiden voyage cruise aboard the world's newest, biggest ocean liner. The sophistication of the on-board automation both helps and hinders the pair. There are some strong personalities in this story, but the culprit has to be the weakest character. There are a lot of supernatural twists, but they are too transparent.
Reading this is quite frustrating, because I kept hearing myself say, "That could never happen that way, even in fantasy fiction." I like to be able to believe that there is the faintest possibility that some of the strange events could actually happen. I felt this way when I used to read Dennis Wheatley, and this book reminds me a lot of that style of writing; but, Wheatley out-classes Preston and Child by a long way, in my opinion.
"I love this writing team. The main character is Aloysius Pendergast, a larger than life character who is better than James Bond. He is fluent in dozens of languages, is an expert in martial arts, knows all about food, wine, flying planes and helicopters. He can pick locks and recite the scientific periodic table. He is a genius who couldn't possibly exist in the real world. But I love reading about him. I have read several books by these authors and always enjoy them. There are no life lessons here but great entertainment."
"When I realized that this was the only one of Preston/Childs' Pendergast novels that I had not read, I added it immediately to my list. Suffice to say, the only disappointment is that I will now have to wait for another one!
In this story, Pendergast and his ward Constance visit a Tibetan monastery for a retreat. There, they are informed that a precious artifact has been stolen from the monks ... and the two of them set out to find it. As is the case with all of the other Pendergast novels, there are some supernatural implications in keeping the artifact out of the wrongs hands -- into which, naturally, it has fallen.
One of the things I love most about this series of novels is the amount of art history and cultural research that goes into them; "The Wheel of Darkness" does not disappoint in this regard.
Highly recommended for those who like a good adventure story with an edge."
