"Capricorn "Cap" Anderson is a one of a kind, not to be believed kind of kid who has lived his life in large part in complete isolation with his hippie grandmother Rain on the grounds of a once thriving commune. Cap and Rain are now the solitary members of the former commune. San has never had pizza, never played video games, never watched television, never even used money. He is quite content with his life on the commune but when his grandmother breaks her hip, his life is thrown into tumult. While Rain recovers from the surgery he is placed with a social worker, who just happens to be a former child member of the commune. She has plenty of sympathy for Cap and plenty of opinions about his life at Garland Farm. Cap is sent to middle school, his first experience with peers. Cap is clearly different from anyone at school and is quickly a target but Cap isn't like any other kid these kids have met and in the end it is he that schools the others. While the plot is rather contrived, the characters are well drawn and you can't help but like Cap and appreciate the message that Korman intends, no matter how predictable."
"Sara and I really liked this author who had written one of the 39 Clues books. The story is very sweet and well developed. It's about a 13-year-old boy, Capricorn, who has lived his entire life on a hippie commune - however, only his grandmother and himself are left there. Consequently, he has not experienced many worldly things like tv, money, junior high...... Well, his grandmother breaks her hip so he has to live with a social worker and attend a regular middle school. The popular kids in the school want to terrorize him because he's different, but he is a pacifist and doesn't react to anything. Without knowing anything about psychology, he just does what is right and thinks the best of everyone. It just seems like Korman really knows the stress of fitting in at that age, but is able to make fun of it and let good triumph in the end. I think this book would be a great one for a teacher to read to students. Lots of discussion would naturally follow. Besides talking about what life is like for young teens who want to fit in, discussions could also focus on what it's like to be a newcomer to the school system, whether from another country where you don't know the language, or from a home-school or no-school environment. It's amazing to me how well the author gets across his point without preaching moral values."
"I remember reading Gordon Korman books when I was young, and it was with these fond memories in mind that I picked this book off the shelves at the bookstore where it was displayed. There, I read the first 50 pages or so... and I enjoyed it so much that I ended up buying the book. I loved it!! So funny, so sweet, and so entertaining. It's a quick read and oh so good.
Cap (short for Capricorn) lives on a commune with his grandmother, Rain, until she breaks her hip and he's forced to live with a foster family while Rain recovers in the hospital. Since the commune had dwindled down to a population of two since its heyday in the 60's (no shock there), Cap has had no experience dealing with the "outside world". He's never even been to school; though he's smart, Rain's always homeschooled him. At the middle school, it is tradition for the popular 8th grade students to nominate the biggest loser in 8th grade for class president, have him/her run unopposed, and then watch as the president struggles to hang on to sanity during the year. With Cap's complete lack of knowledge about the world, his corn husk slippers, tie-dyed clothes, and long unkempt hair, he easily wins. And from there, the story takes off - Cap trying to understand this new world around him and the way the rest of the school reacts to his unconventional ways.
The narrator skips around, giving the reader all sorts of insight to various character's thoughts, and I found myself constantly giggling out loud because of scenes or lines that were just so clever. The story is completely clean, it's not a love story the way many books are, and the main character is so earnest and naive that it's impossible not to root for him. I highly recommend this to people of all ages - kids will love it for the humor and fun, teens will relate, and adults will enjoy it for it's simple but amusing story and characters. An excellent purchase! I loved this."
"Capricorn is a thirteen year old boy who was raised by his grandma known as "Rain" to him and all those who knew her ( or of her). Rain raised her grandson on a farm that was a former commune and raised him of the "hippie" culture. Capricorn had no friends or knew no one other than Rain. One day Rain had an accident which caused her to be hospitalized for 2 months. During that time "Cap" went and stayed with a formed member of Rains commune. "Cap" now had to attend public school and be around eleven hundred other kids his age which he had never encountered before. The story takes you through how he copes with being set out into the world of today's teenagers.
It was hard for me to put this book down. You have the under dog, the "joe cool" , and the wimpy kid who fast becomes Cap's best friend.Cap's innocents made my heart warm and yet feel sorry for him. It made you think how mean kids can be and wonder why when someone is different it threatens them into treating someone meanly."
