"This book is a must-read AND a must-see. The marriage of Beaty's words with Roberts' illustrations is a match made in this reader's heaven. And - most importantly - our 18-month-old daughter fell in love with the book. She requests it every night now. Admittedly at first, she didn't take to it. The illustrations aren't as cartoonish as she used to like (such as Dr. Seuss, Karen Katz, or the guy who does Tails and all those books). So we put Iggy Peck on the shelf for a few months. When we tried it again, it worked liked a charm.
And really if you read Iggy Peck, I think you'll fall for it, too. Beaty's flow throughout the book is as smooth and fun to read as anyone's I've come across. And I've come across a lot of books since our girl was born. Do yourself a favor and track this books down. Just flip through the pages in the store, and I'll bet you'll think of someone in your life who NEEDS this book. But be sure to read it aloud yourself. You'll have a great time doing it."
"What a refreshing story! The basic premise is a rhyming tale about young Iggy Peck who wants to be and Architect. From a toddler he starts building all sorts of things out of highly unusual materials. But when Iggy gets to second grade ends up with a teacher who's afraid of tall buildings. Consequently he's told that architecture in second grade is out of the question. With Iggy's passion removed, school suddenly becomes dull and uninteresting. However, of course, there is a grand chance for Iggy to prove himself towards the end.
I thought the illustrations fitted this story quite well, and for the most part the rhymes were good - only a few times did Beaty "stretch" for the rhyme. But, I thought the word choices were delightful and sounded fun to say and I never felt Beaty talked down to her readers. But I was most pleased with the stories underlying sense of striving for your dreams and how dangerous adults and institutions can be to putting a damper on a child's creativity.
"I have read this book cover to cover every day since we received it six months ago (at Georgia's request). It is without a doubt the best "children's" book I've ever read. I absolutely love the story, the rhyme, and the illustrations. If I wrote a children's book I'd want it to be exactly like this one. It's made, "Good gracious, Ignatious!" a standard exclamation around our house."
