"I'm going try and remember that I read this as a pleasure read, and I am not to tear at it and break it down analytically. But I just can't help it. This is my third Nicholas Sparks novel, after Nights in Rodanthe and The Notebook. I did not like the other two very much, mostly because they felt the same. The characters had no 3D quality and a story that feels unoriginal and regurgitated. I have a feeling he follows some sort of plot outline, only changing names and tweaking story scenarios. Just a bit of a feeling. Anyway, on to The Choice. The characters Gabby and Travis are really of the same flat mold his other characters are. It's just never different. They find each other out of all the people in the world, they are just the perfect fit. Yawn. It's life in a small southern town on North Carolina. Yawn. Does he ever really have his characters live anywhere else? They talk about nothing and probably meet up a total of only a few times before they know that each other is this mysticalthe one. Tackle some real issues Nicholas Sparks. How about having a character battling their 'sexual preference?' Or how about giving your characters a disease that could really cause some conflict. Something like AID's or Genital Herpes? It's hard to not want to break this down because there's obviously a system. Let's tackle some issues I have with this novel. First off, the characters never really talk about anything important. It bothers me because when you don't have time to sit down and get to know someone, you don't know what you're walking into relationship wise. Nicholas Sparks needs to take more time developing his characters and their interactions with each other instead of worrying about putting that tragic plot twist in the end that everyone already knows is going to be there. Between Gabby and Travis, the most important conversations revealed to us are the issues with the pregnant dog and Travis plans for that empty lot in town. THAT'S IT. They seem to have no problem with issues like how Gabby is already involved romantically with someone named Kevin. I say someone named Kevin because he never appears but is the reason she moved her entire life there. Travis has obvious (they tell us repeatedly) commitment issues. So...on top of all that, what makes Gabby so special to Travis? That she likes to cheat on her boyfriend? Is it the red hair? Who would ever know? My guess is that in the magical land of Nicholas Sparks, none of that really matters. The biggest laugh I got out of the entire novel was how Travis handled Dr. Melton. The conflict with Dr. Melton only added humor where romance was suppose to come in. Gabby gets kissed by Dr. Melton who has been trying to show her he's interested in her romantically. It's borderline sexual harassment but not anything for a grown woman to get all hopped up about. If she had went through the proper channels, it wouldn't have been a problem. But not in the magical land of Nicholas Sparks! Travis goes rushing off to Dr. Meltons after seeing a crying Gabby, and eventually his fist meets the doctors face. Over a kiss. Not a grab or a poke, just a kiss. *Sigh*
I'm not even going to comment of the coma. That was just ridiculous."
"We can nod at the obvious that The Choice is typical Nicholas Sparks; faithful readers are not likely to be disappointed. Unless, of course, they actually think about it too much. To be fair, Sparks has declared his interest is writing best-sellers, not something else, and in today's world that means formulaic and predictable. Again, the readers he wants to please are probably not going to be disappointed with The Choice. At the level of lowest resolution, there isn't much more to be said. If we look a little closer, however, some cracks have begun to appear, almost as though he has tired of repeating the same formulae; or, having trouble in making new plots fit the very very profitable formula. The Choice starts of with a typical boy-meets-girl set up; Gabby moves to a Florida to be close to her boyfriend Kevin. And (wouldn't you know it), the oh-so-eligible Travis lives next door. You already see the choice, right? Well, wait till you get to Part II and that isn't the choice at all. Not that it isn't a choice, but it's not the one in the book. As I've tried to be follow Nicholas Sparks, after all he was, at my last checking, the third best-selling author in the world, the formula is pretty clear: (1) a timely subject--livings wills, (2) a maudlin writing style--what writers call 'voice', (3) a male character outwardly very masculine, but who wants a relationship like women wish they did, (4) Quick bonding, one principles conflicted about it. but permanent once achieved --contretemps keep the plot moving, not seven-year itches. (5) an uncomplicated plot that can be told simply and gushingly. This keeps the book relatively short, readable in two or three sittings. (5) No nastiness like cursing (you won't be embarrassed to recommend it to your friends, and sex is just explicit enough that we know what's happening (though Sparks does subscribe to the modern myth that chastity is not preferable to promiscuity). The crack in this edifice is that the choice of The Choice doesn't come until Part II. It is as though Sparks changed his mind about the book after Part 1, which was a fairly humdrum romance with little action and almost no plot. It appears Sparks realized he would have to do something to pull it out, and didn't want to go back and rewrite the whole damn thing. Still, Sparks' readers will be happy. So will his publisher."
