"This time he writes as a journalist telling a hard story of a real event in Colombia. The story unfolds in an unwavering, methodical narrative. No wavering from the reality."
"Although Marquez is usually known for his magical realism, he takes a step back from the expected and writes a journalistic account of the kidnappings of journalists in Columbia in 1990. What makes this book interesting is that it is not told only from the government's perspective or only from the family's perspective; Marquez investigates all angles and gets the story from every possible side associated with this kidnapping. The hostages, the captors, the family, the government and even the Pablo Escobar, the mastermind behind the kidnappings. Marquez's stories are anything but ordinary and this is certainly no exception. One of the interesting things he does is instead of the cliche government saving the hostages from the evil kidnappers, the government is the old, lazy bad guy while the kidnappers are just doing what they have to do. Marquez turns the cliche plot on its head and makes the reader really think hard about who is right and who is wrong. What makes someone good or evil."
"My first time with Marquez' non-fiction, did not disappoint. Great story and great background for folks with some knowledge of the Columbian Drug War (most folks who have read and enjoyed Bowden's "Killing Pablo" would really enjoy this). Very much a "local history" with a lot of great cultural minutia that adds a ton to the story."
