"Melkorka an Irish princess of medevial Irerland is a very satisfied and pampered child. At the time Ierland is a kingdom of great wealth and vast riches. That is until the vikings, considered less then human by her people, strike kiddnapping Melkorka and her little sister Bridget and drag them off to a slve ship where women are not treated kindly. To save herself from a terrible fate on the slaver and being forced to reveil the whereabouts of her countrys treasurs, young Bridget throws herself overbroard into the sea. Melkorka to show respect for the dead takes a vow of silence, always telling herself to hush, hush, hush and never say a word. Her muteness sparkes the curiosity of the ships captain. thinking her a witch he leaves her alone not hurting her like the other women, and instructs his men to leave her alone also. Melkorka uses this to her advantage causing herself to be bought by a man, who although insists on beding her every night, is kind to her and calls her Beauty. Melkorka though forced through many trials keeps her vow of silence, but when she finds out that she is with child she makes a new vow. She will remain silent to every one except her child. She vowed to tell him of her homeland and all that happened to her. Donna Jo Napoli is a great auother and I look forward to reading more of her books. I think her main lessen in this book was to illistrate that even the weakest person can have power over all."
"My library has this shelved in the juvenile section, but I'd be pretty hesitant to actually suggest this one to anyone in elementary school. For the record, that's because I fear the wrath of parents, not because I actually think children would be damaged by reading "adult content".
Anyway, ugh, I am so disappointed. In the copy of this that I read, there was a preview chapter for another of Donna Jo Napoli's books at end of the story, and it was like being hit with a hammer. I was totally not expecting the book to be over, because NOTHING WAS RESOLVED.
I mean, I don't need a tidy ending where everything ends happily and all the answers are given. But I do expect a few answers, you know, to the lingering questions that have been in play since the first third of the novel. Gah. I feel like that was a waste of time."
"This is the first time I've read a book with such a low rating on Goodreads and now I know why. I suppose it serves me right. I'm not exactly certain what the point of the story was. The entire book can be summarized in just one short sentence, "Irish princess is abducted and sold into slavery, the end." The moral of the story seems to be, to just give in to hopelessness.
I'd also like to mention that at two different points in the book, members of her family end up in grave danger and their fates are pretty much abandoned without any further explaination of what happened to them. What?! This is simply inexcusable. Also near the end of the book Melkorka could have taken a chance and asked another royal, who was captured from a different village about the fate of her family, but she continues to keep up the charade of being mute for no explicable reason at this point. The strategy had helped her, but now was the time to find out about her family and possibly entertain the thoughts of rescue. Neither of these happen. Hence my one sentence summary of the book above. Napoli should be ashamed to call herself a writer."
"A tale about an Irish princess who is kidnapped from her home. Mel is kidnapped after her family goes through terrible trama, regarding her younger brother. In regards to her brother, Mel and her 8 year old sister must flee from their family, in order to remain safe from terrible men. Unfortunately while on the run they are both captured, but Mel's cunning little sister is able to escape. Mel on the other hand quickly learns a trick to keep her and the other safe, but at a price. Hush is jam packed with action on every page, and will keep you enthralled throughout Mel's struggle to get home. Mel is transform into a well rounded woman by the end of the book, but everything she has learned has come at a great price."
