"This book is beautiful. The writing feels very Yiddish in its construction and at points reminds me parts of the Yom Kippur liturgy ("who shall live, and who shall die"). His descriptions are so clear that I wanted to eat the cheese, watch the birds, and handle the pigeons. The romance of the love stories and the way the war is portrayed, as well as the devastation, was astounding."
"I just loved this book!.. (and I'm not even sure why). From this book I of course learned about the use of pigeons as espionage carriers...and their use during Israel's War of Independence. The characters who people this book wormed their way into my heart.Theirbackgrounds, their secrets, their personal discoveries made me hate to see the book end."
"An amazing book by one of Israel's most renowned authors. The story takes place in Israel - before statehood. It is really 2 stories of love and family that are brought together at the end. Homing pigeons are woven into the story as symbolic of caring, returning to our roots, longing, etc. I learned a lot about homing pigeons! This is a very lovely novel that I highly recommend."
"This is the story of Yair Mendesohn, born at the end of the 1948 Israel War of Independence to Raya and The Baby (his dead father), who were both carrier pigeon handlers for the Palmach. This book is really unique and very well written - it really brings Israel to life. My only criticism is that the last chapter of the story is rushed and a bit confusing."
