"I generally stay away from the Marvel/DC realms of superhero comics, with a few notable exceptions. One of those exceptions is anything written by Neil Gaiman. Here he has done, again, what he does so well in taking an old property of one of those two comics giants and rebooting it with incredibly good fun, beauty, and depth.
The Eternals was an old title from Marvel in the 1970s that apparently never quite fit in with the rest of their universe; thus it languished a bit and, in the opinion of Gaiman, never quite received the proper treatment that the core idea deserved. Gaiman has righted that wrong by crafting a solid story and teaming up with celebrated artist John Romita Jr., who's art here is fantastic.
The story involves a creation myth of sorts, a super-human race hidden amongst normal mankind who have lost their history, catastrophically huge demi-gods, and appearances by a few other Marvel heroes, Iron Man being the most notable. I didn't find that I missed out a whole lot by not knowing in intricate detail the storylines of these mainstream Marvel characters; The Eternals stands well on its own."
"Celestials, giant candy-colored robots creatures from outer space, came to the earth a long, long time ago to seed the planet with life. Plants, dinosaurs, humanoid types, the works. They created the Eternals, a hundred of them; they look like humans but they have super powers and used to be worshiped as gods. They also created Deviants, millions of them, which are monsters that come in ton of shades of evil.
Something happens (I won't say what, precisely) and the Eternals lose their memory of who they are. Enter the two (reluctant) heroes, Mark and Sersi. They think they are human but they are really Eternals. One of them is eventually convinced to help save the world from certain doom.
This has classic Gaiman elements of fantasy and a world-spanning epic nature. Sadly, I must retract my early claim that this has a great plot. Maybe it's my general unfamiliarity with comic book story lines, but I found it hard to follow who the good guys and the bad guys were. They seemed to keep switching around and after a while I didn't care enough to keep them straight. That said, I did read through to the quasi-end, which was really just a set up for the next volume (which is fine, that's how comics work).
People who are more into comics would probably enjoy this more than I did. I love Neil Gaiman's fiction and was hoping for more of a graphic novel, not a glorified comic book."
"In a wonderful homage to their original creator, Jack Kirby, Neil Gaiman provides a great tale of the Eternals, their mission and their fall from seeming immortality. Delving deep into their extra-terrestrial origins, Gaiman tells a great story that brings these characters back into the Marvel Universe and provides them with a role and place which they have lacked for almost 30 years. John Romita, Jr's artwork is top-notch."
"Very quickly you get the feeling that this story did not go as planned. Apparently originally scheduled for six issues, it ballooned to seven near the end, and it shows from how oblong the ending goes; a fight scene is added, antagonists disappear or switch side with little explanation, and the whole thing feels both rushed and padded. No wonder, then, that a regular series sprouted from this. But for its shaky narrative, it's an amusing story about ancient beings we'd call gods, who were designed by beings they'd call gods, who aren't aren't talking to anybody. They all wake up now, with millions of years of history unaccounted for, and visions of lives they led. Gaiman proudly straddles the hokeyness, even letting Iron Man and Ant Man pop in. It wore out its charm around the line, "He's madder than Forlock the Extremely Mad!" but I still let it slide for serving as a love letter to the Kirby era in comics."
