"Now I'm obviously more emotionally invested in this book having adopted a child from Ethiopia, but this book is incredible. It tells the tale of one woman who found herself an unlikely hero by bringing in AIDS orphans to her home. She does an amazing job of telling the horrible story of the spread of AIDS in Africa. She blends statistics with the story of this woman seamlessly. I cried multiple times reading this book. It was often very hard to read. Our Western sensitivities don't like to be reminded of how we ignored what we happening over there for so long. The end of the book is heartwarming as it tells the tales of Ethiopian children adopted in the United States."
"This is an excellent read about the HIV epidemic in Africa. Melissa Fay Greene weaves in and out facts and research about the HIV epidemic with info on one woman's life, Heregewoin Tefera.
Heregewoin Tefera is an everyday Ethiopian woman. She loses her adult daughter to HIV and decides to accept a couple of children from the local Catholic Charities group to stay with her out of kindness since their parents died of HIV. Soon, she accepts more and more. Heregewoin eventually grows into a full-fledged orphanage who devotes her time to taking care of children who will be adopted by foreign parents. She is amazingly selfless and through her story we see the true disparity of children to adults in Africa because of HIV.
Melissa Fay Greene can be annoying at times throwing in her opinions and ideals as the answer without question. She goes on and on about the evils about intellectual property rights and patent laws regarding medications. While anyone who reads this story can emotionally understand her despair to help the African people get medicine, she needs to get a reality check. Yes, some people will work to just better humanity and end suffering, but many do it for the money. All people do not think just like her. If things ended up being like she wanted with intellectual property rights regarding medicine, surely a lot of the talent would most likely pursue other careers. Anyway, that part was annoying! I would have rather she just stuck to the facts and kept her opinions and ideals out of it."

"A very powerful story of a middle-class woman who began to take in orphans and abandoned children in Ethiopia before it was a culturally acceptable thing to do! This book is moving on a number of levels - reading the individual sagas of these orphans is gripping, but hearing their stories set against the staggering condition of children in a country ravaged by poverty and HIV/AIDS is almost incredible. The need is so massive (in many cases, unnecessarily so - from dictators who orchestrated famine, to Western drug companies who overpriced their drugs, to a society paralyzed by myths about what AIDS was and how it spread). This is one of those books that makes you want to move to Ethiopia and start taking in as many orphans as you can find. The missing element in the story, however, is the spiritual and eternal side of caring for these children. May we never get caught up in the cruelty of comforting children on their way to hell! Their physical needs are acute, and sacrificing a middle-class lifestyle to provide for them is in line with the Gospel, but it is not the Gospel. It is not enough. And the moment we imagine this kind of work can stand on its own merit is the moment we cease to operate as God-honoring evangelicals. And it is the moment we cease to truly love these kids. I pray that many from the West are stirred to adopt as they read this book. And I pray that all who read are stirred to lay down their lives to see that spiritual orphans are adopted into the Father's forever family!"
