"Anna Valdez Period 5/6 Slam Nick Honrby pages:309 September 30, 2009 Book Rating:8
The person who change the most in the beginning thru the end it was Sam. Because in the beginning he was all interested in the skating and he always wanted to be with his friends. He didn't put attention to his parents and he wasn't a good guy. When he really change was when he met this girl named Alicia. Alicia was a had a major importance because she was now Sam's girlfriend. I think this conflict was for both external and internal because Sam's got pregnant his girlfriend, and all this affected all both families. I rated this book in a 8 because it was a good book and I liked and it was interesting. the ending of this book was that Sam and Alicia were living together with their baby. they were living in Alicia's house. Sometimes he goes to his mom's house and with her sister which is a little bit alder than his son Roof. I liked the ending because i thought it was going to ended like this a happy ending. I think their son will grow and maybe they will not be still together because they were to young to work like a couple and his mom will get married with Mark he is his mom's boyfriend. I think that Sam like to play skate, and that when he met Alicia all the things change for him all was different."
"You can always count on Nick Hornby ("About a Boy," "High Fidelity," "A Long Way Down," etc.) for an easy, witty read. "Slam" is written from the POV of a 16-18-year old boy in London whose only care in the world is skateboarding until he finds himself in an adult situation. Not Hornby's best, but I do think it's impressive how well he captures the voice and cluelessness of a teenager."
"I always enjoyed Nick Hornby's stuff and was glad he decided to venture into the realm of YA. Although I wasn't thrilled with this book overall, its still a well written work that was worth the run through.
Sam is a decent main character and his narrative voice and reactions to what happens to him in the plot seem genuine. The biggest thing about him though that I couldn't get passed was his complete lack of friends. Besides Rabbit, who he never pretends to like, he has absolutely no friends which seems unrealistic for a kid his age. It left a hole in his character that I thought Hornby should have filled and would have made him a more enjoyable character.
The plot was decent, but really didn't have any highs or anything that forced me to want to read the next chapter. I just was never really able to get into it.
Also, I really was not a big fan of the whole Tony Hawk element to the book . Sam's conversation with Tony, although he is able to produce some nuggets of wisdom from them, seem really flat, like Sam is asking him questions and Tony is just repeating lines from his book. Which is fine, since Sam can't possibly talk to Tony since he is just a poster. But Tony can't hold a real conversation with him, but somehow can bend space time and send Sam to the future? For realsies? And after realizing the first time when Sam realizes he is in the future, he doesn't do anything crazy like buy a sports alamanac(i.e. Back to the Future) and rack up on some bets to provide for his newly born son? It just didn't feel like it meshed with the rest of the story. I think Hornby needed to make Tony much more dynamic and involved in Sam's life to ease in the fantasy element in the story so the time travel aspect seemed more in tuned with the rest of the book.
Overall, it was a decent read, but really not impressed."
"The book Slam by: Nick Hornby is about a boy named Sam who is 16 years old and lives with his mother. Sam's mother gave birth to Sam when she was 16 and puts a lot of pressure on Sam to not make that mistake. He loves to skateboard and has a poster of Tony Hawk who he talks to when he has a problem. Sam never had a real girlfriend, but he wanted one only if she didn't interfere with his skating that he loved so much. His mother had a party to go to and brought Sam along with her were he met a very nice girl named Alicia. Everything for them was great until he found out that she was pregnant. Now Sam is stricken with trying to find a way to tell his parents and her parents, along with all the future commitment. Sam has always been the kid in the family and is now going to face all the same things that his mother did. There are many other situations and challenges along the way as well for Sam. I think that people around the same age as Sam would enjoy this book the most because they would be able to relate to him easier. This book is more for a boy, but could easily be enjoyed by a girl as well, for the reason that the main character is a boy. This book would be great for anyone older then a teenager as well. I feel that this book was well written and would be a good read for anyone around Sam's age or someone who is into teenager type of books that are well written. This book makes you want to keep reading and on the tip of your seat in a way that only Hornby can achieve.
