"I really enjoyed Patchett's "Bel Canto" several years ago, so I decided to try another book by the same author. I enjoyed this one just as much. It is the story of a very interesting family. The father, called only "Doyle" throughout the novel, is the former mayor of Boston. He and his wife Bernadette have one child, but then adopt two African-american brothers ten years later. Bernadette dies of cancer when the boys are relatively young, leaving Doyle to raise the three boys by himself. He wants nothing more than for one of them to grow up to be President, not because of his need to further his own glory, but because of his belief in the political system. Unfortunately, the oldest birth son turns out to be a trouble maker and the younger boys have other interests. However, one night after Doyle has dragged the adopted sons, now 20 and 21, to a speech by Jesse Jackson, the youngest son is saved from certain death when he is pushed out of the way of a speeding car by a woman standing in the crowd. She is hit and rushed to the hospital, leaving behind a stunned 11-year-old daughter. How the two families come together makes up the rest of the story. The author said this is a book about politics, but I saw it as a book about identity and family. I think there are many wonderful layers to explore."
"I just don't know how Ann Patchett does all she does in one book. She deals with parenting, family relationhships, drug abuse, race, etc. etc. For example, her knowledge of fish, a subject Tip is expert in, is vast! Also, did she prowl Boston looking for the right neighborhood to use as her setting? How did she know enough about AIDs in Africa to make Sullivan's story ring true? The book begins with a description of the statue of the Virgin Mary which resembles Bernadette, and this beginning threw me off a bit, leading me to expect a story different from what developed. But I became so interested in that story that . . .who cares! I was very taken by her description of how one comes to love adopted children, how one cannot imagine their lives in another family. I was not quite so taken by the mystical visit from the real Tennessee in the hospital as "our" Tennesse lay dying, so I'm anxious to hear what the others in my book club thought of that part. My across the street neighbor told me she didn't like the ending at allo, so I was gritting my teech as the number of pages left me to read diminished, but in fact the ending pleased me. A great book. The characters were very believable to me and I liked them, expecially Kenya. I couldn't read fast enough to learn what was going to happen next. I recommend Run to everyone."
"My response to Ann Patchett's writing is very mixed. Bel Canto is one of my all-time favorite books; The Magician's Assistant is one of the worst books I've ever read. I'd have to classify Run as somewhere in between. I was interested enough in the story line to finish reading it in a couple of days--I wanted to see where she was going with it, and how it would end up. I must say there were several good plot twists, and at least one as it unfolded was completely unexpected. Unfortunately, the characters of the two adopted black children proved problematic for me. I struggled with how free they were of any conflict with regard to race and their place in being adopted by a white family. It just seemed completely unrealistic for a contemporary setting--more like the possible future. I'm not sure I could whole-heartedly recommend the book."
"This book sucked me in from the first page. I stayed up late after a not-quite-long-enough-flight to finish reading it. The writing is smart and the premise fascinating. Just the right mix of family drama and political implications. Definitely a little far fetched at times...one too many coincidences...and one near-death hallucination I could do without to add yet another twist to this windy road. But as always, Patchett's prose is lyrical without ever being overly wordy and a delight to read!"
