"This book was really good. I love the badgers in these series, so it made the book all the more better. It was sad, though in the beginning, but overall I really liked it!! =D"
"A nice surprise for a longtime and long-concerned Redwall fan, and one that gives me hope for future books.
The characters in this one really shine through. Orkwil is a very atypical Redwall hero, starting out as a thief and growing beyond that while still hanging onto some of his faults throughout the story. The lone journey of Maudie is a different take on the usually incorrigible, usually male Salamandastron hero - she seems to realize what's at stake and she's not pictured wolfing down food as often as her predecessors. Even Gorath, the typical badger, stands out from the long line of Big Angry Beasts in his much more serious struggle with Bloodwrath. I even managed to despise the main villain, Vizka, while appreciating how intelligent he was. The only character to fall a bit flat was Salixa, who shows up late and ever-so-conveniently and doesn't have enough time to enchant the reader as she does her fellow characters. Another character who dies far too early on in the book was hardly mourned over and felt like a throw away, which in turn felt rather callous and seems like a slap in the face for any emotional investment the reader may have had in that character.
What I really didn't appreciate about the book was the intense role dreams played in the ongoing plot. We're all familiar with Martin the Warrior appearing to the heroes, but we're talking like every major plot point somebody's having a dream where any normal-life event would have worked just as well. We all know Redwall will never be conquered, but the profusion of dreams took on a deus ex machina quality and made it feel as though nothing was at stake.
However, overall this was a fine story to be appreciated for what it is: a Redwall story. After eighteen books we know what the ending will be like for the Abbey, but the investment in these new and unique characters raised the individual stakes. Also, Mr. Jacques seems to be building up the story of his world again after a long string of one-shot post-Redwall stories. There are references to vermin wars that get me hopeful we'll see him exploring more of his own timeline in the future."
