"Don senses that something is up at the mine where his father works. He does some investigating and learns about the situation. Through the story he tries to help his parents find out what his sister Susan wants for Christmas. Sweet, short and not to deep. By the way, I think my dog Hannah is smart like Don's dog Frank!"
"This is one of the best from Bill Wallace in a long time. Don Franklin, a 12-year-old in 1957 southeastern Oklahoma looks forward to the coming Christmas holiday with both anticipation and anxiety -- hoping for a new Zebco fishing reel and worrying that the family money troubles will prevent anyone from having a merry Christmas. His father is a strong advocate for mine safety, and thanks largely to his efforts, part of the local mine is closed for federal safety inspection, causing resentment among many miners and fears that the mine may close completely. Adding to Don's worries is his little sister's refusal to tell what she wants for Christmas, standing firm on her unshakable belief that, if Santa is real, he will know her wish and bring her the gift. No one wants to see her childlike faith disappointed, but their best efforts to discover her desire are fruitless.
Teachers will find this a nice read-aloud near the holiday season and a good way to reinforce the concept of point of view, since the story is told in chapters that alternate between Don's viewpoint and that of the family dog."
