"Cool book geared for younger readers, but, well, I got a lot out of it, too. Series of brief overviews into all sorts of fun topics like spontaneous combustion, great prison escapes, the truth about Columbus, etc, with a skeptic's perspective."
"Nothing arouses more curiosity than a book called "Do Not Open." It's even better when it's a huge compendium of tidbits in a format that's kind of like "The Encyclopedia of Immaturity" meets "Choose Your Own Adventure." The crazy collage cover gives some indication of the bright, packed pages within, but generally the mixed-media layout is creative and readable, complete with "links" at the bottom of each page that point you to other topics of interest (i.e., on the "Camoflage" page, it says "Like finding hidden things? Go to Holbein's The Ambassadors on pp. 82-83 and Arnolfini Marriage on pp. 84-85").
There are some cool effects, such as a stealth plane diagrammed in clear gloss over a blue sky, and fold-out pages. Topics are very high-interest: optical illusions, vampires vs. werewolves, conspiracy theories. The "How to Use" page at the beginning actually encourages readers to dive into the book at any point, and follow their interests from there: "In time, you can probably work your way through the whole book!"
I had to close it so I could get some other stuff done! Great gift book; great for fans of the Ology books, Guinness Records books, and Ripley's Believe It Or Not."
