About this title: Ricardo Somocurcio is in love with a bad girl. He loves her as a teenager in Lima in 1950, and next in Paris, where she appears as the enchanting Comrade Arlette. In Llosas beguiling new novel, the strange bedfellows of good and bad turn out not to be what they appear.

"I risk death in the hands of an angry mob of Peruvians for saying this, but: Vargas Llosa is overrated. His writing is not even close to the levels of complexity and beauty of García Márquez, the shock of an Horacio Quiroga, or the novelty of a Borges. His books are, however, very entertaining. "Las travesuras de la niña mala" is not an exception: an easy and sometimes gripping read, with fascinating side stories. It is a pity that the two main characters are so irritating, and especially the "niña mala" are so irritating, so unbelievable in their whims and obsessions.
"No es culpa de Francia si seguimos siendo un par de extranjeros, querido. Es culpa nuestra. Una vocación, un destino. Como nuestra profesión de intérpretes, otra manera de ser siempre un extranjero, de estar sin estar, de ser pero no ser.""
""The Bad Girl" by Vargas Llosa is an amazing love story about a man who falls deep in love with a girl the moment he met her when they are kid. A girl who would be his joy and his pain throught all his life, who would be coming in and out of his life again and again. Beautiful written, the book ask what's the true face of love? Ricardo's love for the bad girl is one of this faces, for love has many. Just as Garcia Marquez has "Love in the time of Cholera",his wonderful take on love, this one is Vargas Llosa's take on this universal theme,a love that take us from one side of the earth to the other, from Peru to Paris to London,Tokio,Madrid,...to the deepest places of the heart. A pleasure to read, with the magical touch of Vargas Llosa, one of the best writers in the world, and one of the few who deserve to win the Nobel Price of literature!"
"This book was "sale bale" meaning okey dokey. I couldn't put it down when I was reading it, but you have to remember, I'm in an entertainment vacuum. The protagonist encounters this borderline personality disorder chick repeatedly throughout his life, and for some reason, is madly enamored of her. I relate to his view on life: he is happy with the simple. His entire goal in life is to live in France, which infuriates the bpd, who needs to fill her inner vacuum w/excitement and the pursuit of ?? Anyway, the 'grrl interrupted' becomes somewhat understandable the more you get to know her, not more likable mind you, but everyone knows I have issues w/the bdps of this world, being as how I used to magnetically attract them. I'd like to go to Peru, how about you?"
"I really loved this book. Embarrassingly for a Latin American literature major, I've never read Vargas Llosa before, but I enjoyed this so much I'm definitely going back for more. This novel is a modern-day reimagining of Madame Bovary -- the main character, Ricardo, a Peruvian, becomes obsessed with a girl he meets as a child in Lima. As they continue to cross paths later in life and across the world, he falls more and more in love with the mysterious woman he knows only as "the bad girl." Ricardo is completely devoted to this woman, even though she manages to psychologically abuse him in just about every way possible and then abandon him over and over again. Just when you think she's done the worst thing a person can do to another person, she outdoes herself. And Ricardo -- well, he's clearly a masochist, because he always allows her to come back into his life, even though he knows better, even though he knows that their relationship (the highlight of his life) is, for the bad girl, only a boring interlude between more exciting adventures. The story of their twisted love affair is completely gripping. Even though you know that things will always end up the same way between them -- she shows up, she hurts him, she leaves -- you can't help but wonder which new identity she'll have this time, what horrible things she'll do to Ricardo, and how he'll pick up the pieces when she's gone. You can't even help, despite your better instincts, rooting for them to make it in the end. Beautifully (but not too difficultly) written, overflowing with passion, The Bad Girl is a really great novel that I plan on recommending to everyone."
