"This book is an eyewitness account of Operation Redwing in Afghanistan in June 2005. It resulted in the largest loss of life in Navy SEAL history. I remember hearing about it on the news and feeling very sad. It's an amazing story; first about the training they undergo, and then the operation itself, where four SEALs were outnumbered at least 35:1 in a firefight, yet still managed to take out half of the Taliban fighters. The three SEALs who died, fought on even after they were shot. Their heroism and bravery is awe-inspiring.
It also makes you see how the rules of engagement, made far from the battlefield, can cause the officers to second-guess their decisions. In this case, they spared some goatherds who stumbled across them, and then these men betrayed them to the Taliban, and the fight ensued.
It's also very sad and moving. This book has made grown men cry. Three men died in the firefight and sixteen others were killed when their rescue helo was shot down.
As in all battles, you see the worst in men, and the best in men. Some of the Pashtun tribesmen risked the lives of everyone in their village in order to shelter and protect Marcus from the Taliban.
I thought Marines were tough, but SEAL training is brutal. The fact that they endured Hell Week at Coronado, prepared them for this ultimate battle and Marcus' own Hell Week in the Hindu Kush mountains."
