"The presidential election of 1800 is one of those events that is placed on a pedestal. It is considered as the first time in modern history that two parties exchanged power peacefully. This is an excellent retelling of that event.
I really enjoyed that the focus was kept narrow. While, everything impacts and has a reaction, it is sometimes helpful to have the story distilled down to the basics of what happened. Why did this happen in this, rather than this and this were going on and it made this happen which led to this impact on Adams campaign."
In graduate school I had to read Larson's Pulitzer winner, Summer for the Gods, about the Scopes Trial. This short history of the Election of 1800, the first "modern" election in the sense of campaigning and party politics, is a perfect continuation of a lifetime of solid, entertaining history. Larson has a pleasant knack for writing compelling, understandable history, with analysis that is hidden enough to not frighten laymen, but insightful enough to not make his work a simple regurgitation of events. I approve of this kind of history: thoughtful, but not necessarily taxing to non-historians.
Of course, Larson has fantastic subject matter. Hamilton, Jefferson, Washington, Adams, Burr and the Pickneys, as well as side actors like Madison, Monroe and Abigail Adams are all important players in not only American Presidential history, but in American personality history. All were persons of letters, strong opinions, and, in Adams' case, epic bouts of rage. Fiction could not assemble a better cast."
