"Igraine is the daughter of two magicians and her older brother, Albert, is training to be a magician is as well. Igraine, however, does not want to do magic. Igraine plans of one day being a Knight.
On her 12th birthday Igraine gets a magical suit of armor from her parents. But, while making her birthday gift they were somehow turned into pigs. If that wasn't bad enough, the castle next to them is taken over by Osmond the Greedy and he is planning on taking the magical books from her parents. Albert has to find a way to defend the castle while their parents figure out how to turn themselves human again.
That leaves Igraine the only one who can go and get the ingredient for her parents to be human again.
This was a very nice, light-hearted story that I think could be enjoyed by anyone. I liked all the characters, Igraine and The Sorrowful Knight were great, I even liked Igraine's cat too. This book is just a lot of fun to read and I really liked it."
"Cornelia Funke has a winner with Igraine the Brave. Just right for the lovers of fairy tales, magic, or fantasy, on the sweeter side of "Harry Potter". Igraine is a spirited and loyal heroine, who uses her brain and her skills to help the people she cares about. The narrative was tight and engaging, with just enough whimsy to remind me of the Enchanted Forest Chronicles and some of Lloyd Alexander's light-hearted quest tales. This book is readable for any kid who can tackle the likes of Ramona Quimby or Charlie and the Chocolate Factory."
"Igraine's fairy-tale life comes to a halt when her parents mistakenly (magically) turn themselves into pigs and she's the only one who can procure a cure. Seizing her chance to help out and prove herself worthy of knighthood, she sets off on her quest. Brother stays behind to guard the treasured Singing Magic Books from the Spiky Knight. Igraine has spunk and a great sense of humor, so girls will probably love her."
"Igraine wears magical armor, goes to a giant for hairs for a potion and helps a knight regain his honor. There are so many characters vying for a slice of the magical power that I didn't feel Igraine was a strong main character. It is a good story about dedication to family and chivalry. Fourth graders may enjoy it, but I don't see many sixth gaders wanting to read this."
