"In an ordinary back to school physical, Ben Wolf discovers he has a terminal illness (leukemia? it is never named) and has a year to live. He decides to forego treatment and avoids telling anyone about his illness in order to live his senior year in high school as normally as possible--except he discovers there is nothing normal about his life any more. There is an interesting sub-plot about Ben's attempt to have a street named after Malcolm X in this tiny, rural (white) Idaho town. This is a very moving book with individualized characters. The coach is especially well-drawn, and a good example of a tough but understanding teacher, in contrast to the portrayal of History teacher Mr. Lambeer, who keeps trying to prevent Ben's Malcolm X project. The relationship between Ben and his younger, bigger brother Cody is touching. The one thing I felt puzzling about the book was Ben's nighttime visits from Hey-soos (Jesus in Spanish), who leads him to better understand his relationships with others. Ben is never sure exactly who Hey-Soos is, and neither am I. I don't see why the author made the choice to have these discussions framed by this quasi-spiritual context. Apparently he felt someone needed to help Ben direct his own moral compass, but why this structure? I'm still trying to work this one out. But in the meantime, give it a try."
"Ben Wolf is a senior in Trout, Idaho and he learns that he only has one year to live. Deciding to keep this a secret, Ben changes his life-style and attitude. He joins the football team and starts going out with Dallas, a beautiful girl whom he loves. Academically, Ben starts to lose interest in school, often questioning the teacher. Ben also learn about other people in the town during that year and the many secrets they held. My favorite part of the book is when Ben decides to not waste his last few moments of his life and live the life that allows him to be accepted by others. I can connect to this because any teenager would try to fit into their surrounding environment if they can. If i were to know i had only one year to live, i would also give up my long term goals and try to achieve what i want and can achieve within that year. But then, there are long term consequences i would also have to consider, just like Ben starts to pick up over the months. "My coach is still ailing over his high school sweetheart's death. How would he feel if he finds out I died when my time is up?" (Crutcher 178). I would recommend this book to those interested in a that takes the reader on an emotional journey that talks about life. Those that don't mind the writing style of Chris Crutcher are also recommended to read this book. This book contains languages and ideas that may cause a lot of controversy of discussion and upset the reader. Those that don't mind this is recommend for this book as this is another good book written by Chris Crutcher."
""If someone's different from you and it scares you or makes you made, that's God telling you to take a closer look. If you're scared or mad, that's about you, not about the person who scares or angers you." (p. 143) "People who feel ruined, or scared all the time, simply can't tell the truth. When she can tell it, own it instead of letting it own her, she'll be fine." p. 170 "You might want to be a little more patient. Things aren't always as they seem. The universe works in strange and mysterious ways." "So I've heard. Actually, I always thought the strange and mysterious ways argument was just a cop-out." "The way most people understand it, it is. All it really means is there's a lot in the universe that humans don't understand. But the truth doesn't need to be known, or believed, to be true." p. 202 "Just know that everything started as one, everything still is one, and it will end up as one." p. 242 "I feel like I should be asking about the meaning of life or something." "You already did that," he says. "Time wasted. You're playing a game. A beautiful, wonderful, hard, scary game. And you're gathering information fro it." "For what?" "To take with." p. 243 "There is only one thing that is universal." "What's that?" "The truth." p. 243 "...Why are you here? I mean why now, and why me?" "Because you can use the help, and because you can take the help. And because giving to you, and to people like you, is my best way to spread the truth." p. 258 "But all my trouble so far has come from being the little control freak that I am, deciding who should hear what when and trying to control other people's emotions by what I say. It's become clearer and clearer it's just disrespectful to not let people deal with things in a straightforward manner." p. 280 "There are guys on the team, like Cody, I'd give my life for. But you have to be willing to lay down your body for all of them, if you want to put the best you on the field." p. 288"
