"Vampire Academy by Richelle Mead is the book I choose to read for my reading project in English II. This was an amazing book that I recommend to all fans of the Twilight Saga or the Vampire Kisses Series. In Vampire Academy Rose Hathaway, a Dhampir and Guardian in training, and Lissa Dragomir, a Moroi and the last of her royal family line, are students of St.Vladimir's Academy in Montana. When Lissa and Rose survive a car crash that kills all of Lissa's family strange things begin to happen. Lissa finds dead animals in her dorm and receives threats that force Rose to take her and run away. After living on their own for two years the two girls are caught by a group of Guardians, trained protectors of the Moroi, and forced to return to the academy. Upon their return Rose is placed under house arrest and Lissa tries hard to stay under the radar to prevent a repeat of the previous year's events. Because of the 2 years lost Rose has to take extra classes under the instruction of Dimitri, the leader of the group of Guardians that brought them back and a master of all things involving Guardian training. Over a period of time events similar to the ones that forced them to leave 2 years before begin to happen again and this time instead of fleeing, they stay and fight. My favorite characters in this book would have to be Rose and Dimitri because of the strange relationship that they have and the way the author describes them. The twists and complications of their relationship kept me reading this book, along with the way that the Mead described the tension that was in some of their encounters. My least favorite character would have to be Prince Victor because of the way that he just took Lissa and had planned to keep her prisoner for her own personal gain against her will. The whole concept of the book captivated my attention, starting with the title and ending with the depth the author used to describe the characters. I love how no matter how hard I tried throughout the book I could never guess how it was going to end because of the way unexpected things kept happening and secrets would be revealed that changed my perspective on what was happening. Throughout the book the emotions of the characters just sucked me into the plot until it was like I was feeling the emotions first hand, not through Meads description of them. I went from feeling frustration from Rose's confusion about her feelings for Dimitri to feeling Lissa's black, blinding rage at the way her fellow royals were treating Rose. I don't really have a favorite line from the book, but I really enjoyed reading the dialogue between Rose and Dimitri because I could feel the feelings they had for each other grow and turn into love."
"I loved this book! I'm not into YA books, but I loved this one. Maybe it was because even though it was a YA book, I didn't remember it was about a girl of 17 until she said she was that age. The heroine in this book doesn't behave like a teen, and Dimitri for sure isn't. I can't wait to read more about them. I was really sad to see that the book ended with both of them separated.
I hope this changes in the future.
If you read this book knowing that it is YA, you'll love it. I read other paranormal YA books, and didn't like them this much. It is better than the house of night series and the vampire diaries. If you liked those, you'll love this series."
"I recall now the reason I don't read much young adult fiction. I never did, even when I was part of the target audience. Some titles, like Twilight make me reorder my view of the genre. Vampire Academy does not. Though it was entertaining enough to hold my attention and the pages flipped quickly, I found this book diminished by the same genre conventions that make me shun teen flicks: self-conscious cliques and power dynamics, Mean Girls tactics, and self-destructive behaviors that assume that there are no mature teenagers in existence, of any species.
Rose, the protagonist, is meant to be aggressive and a little reckless. She is, but her devotion to her best friend slash charge is frankly her only admirable trait. Outside of these moments, she drinks, indulges in drugs, and drapes herself over every which man to feel desired while somehow maintaining her virginity. This is, to borrow from Rose, "fun." She has a distrust and disrespect for authority, etc., etc. Rose is the stereotypical immature high school girl, and I can't see 24 year-old (mature) Dimitri's interest in her. Her shining moments are few.
Continuing with the cliches, much of the book revolves around Gossip Girl-worthy he said, she said high school rumors and drama. The book really earns its title. Vampire Academy is just that, Vampires in High School. There are some interesting moments: vampire politics, emotional problems, and a bite-size dollop of action.
I'll give the author credit for telling the story from the perspective of the bodyguard protagonist. That was innovative, but Mead's Vision of High School is not. While I was reading, I was very much struck by the impression that the author included everything that she imagined concerns a high school girl, very after-school special.
The book also suffers from some sloppy "setup" troubles. For example, when first introducing some vampire traditions, the narrator, Rose, abruptly trades her voice for that of an omniscient third person, explaining reactions and motivations, including her own. Fortunately, as this is only a problem while first introducing the world, it's safe to assume that the other books won't suffer from this, but it was jarring and extremely irritating for me.
At any rate, if you envision high school as the above (or maybe you just eat that stuff up, LOL), you might enjoy Vampire Academy, particularly if you like this vision served in episodes. Someone said this was dark-- maybe if you're a young adult or you've yet to broach darker urban fantasy. I hear the next book's about Winter Break. If you're looking for some less than demanding entertainment to pass a few hours, Vampire Academy will do. Otherwise, look elsewhere. It's no Twilight."
