"This is a fascinating and powerful book. I read relatively little non-fiction, but I'm glad I read this one. Dr. Amen is a neuroscientist and psychiatrist who pioneered the use of SPECT imaging brain scans to help his patients. He found that he could see actual physical/chemical changes in specific regions of the brain which corresponded to various mental health issues. These scans help him more accurately diagnose and treat patients. Dr. Amen uses the analogy that when the computer hardware of the brain is broken, it can't run the sophisticated software programs involved in counseling. All the therapy in the world won't help if the biophysiology of the brain needs help first!
It was very interesting to read this book and think about myself, family members, and friends who deal with some of these issues. It is applicable in so many ways to everything from ADHD to depression to addictions, etc. It is inspiring to see how many problems really can be helped, how many people can improve their quality of life so much.
Another aspect of Dr. Amen's work is the study of how drugs, alcohol, tobacco, and caffeine affect the brain. It is quite startling, even horrifying to see pictures of people's brains which are riddled with holes because of drug use, including marijuana.
Dr. Amen sometimes blows these pictures up to poster size and gives them to his patients. Seeing such a picture hanging on your wall is a powerful motivator to keep taking your medication for bipolar disorder or to stop using illegal drugs!
I would recommend this book to anyone interested in the brain or in mental health. This book was written about 10 years ago, and Dr. Amen started his work about 20 years ago. He is now well respected in his field. So I hope that his techniques have since spread to other psychiatrists. (Since Dr. Amen is an expert in ADD, I'm curious as to whether my friend Annette has heard of him?)"
"I find Amen's insights into which regions of the brain are responsible for certan behaviours absolutely fascinating. The chapter on SPECT imaging alone was especially interestng to me (i.e. the history of the development of this field of nuclear medicine from fuzzy unreliable images to its ability to capture a "working brain" in motion, so to speak). His case studies of patients with physically dysfunctional brains helps remove a lot of the stigma on many mental health issues; and he makes a great argument for treatment options including psychoactive drugs with other therapies."
"This is a MUST read for all youngsters in America of today. Absolute eye opener. This is a 10 Golden Star book . Healthy person brain is large. Unhealthy person brain is small.
Healthy causes: Good Nutrition, regular exercise, good sleep, happy family among other things.
Unhealthy causes: Alchol (Dr Amen says No Alchohol 2 glass of wine per week is absolute maximum, if you must). Drugs (unhealthy work environment with fumes can be more harmful than drugs), lack of proper nutrition, unhappy family/social life"
