"My teacher read this book to us because we are learning about Suddan (I dont know how to spell it!). I think that this book is awesome. The main charecters in the book are Kek and his Aunt and Uncle his cousin and somone that he gets a job from, grooming and feeding her cow. I learned that in the 1970s - 1990s there were bombing and men with guns that were bombing Suddan. There were at least 1,000,000 kids walking to the U.S. The oldest kids were 11-15. The kids were really young. Also they had lack of food. I feel really bad because they had to go past rivers and valleys and Men with guns on their way to the U.S. A lot of people were killed."
"Kek is a refugee from Sudan, trying to make sense of life in Minnesota. It's winter when he arrives - a time when few Americans want to live in Minnesota, much less a boy who's used to hot temperatures year round. He lives with his aunt and older cousin Ganwar, and adjusts to life in America with some help from his case worker, Dave; sympathetic ESL teachers; and a friendly girl named Hannah. He and Ganwar both bond with a lonely cow who reminds them of the life and families they've lost.
The verse-novel format makes it easy and quick to read. Supplemental materials at the end answer some of the questions that readers may have about the war in Sudan that created many "lost boys" like Kek, and direct them to further resources about refugees in general."
"Kek is a refugee from Sudan who has come to the United States to live with his Aunt and cousin when his camp is attacked. He and his mother are separated during the conflict, and Kek is sent to America alone. He has to adjust to his new home, new life, school, and all of the strange American customs he encounters. He also has to learn to speak English. Kek makes a lot of mistakes while he's learning (like putting dishes in the clothes washing machine), and wants to do something to pay his aunt back for her patience, so he gets a job caring for an elderly woman's cow and helping her on her farm. He also arranges for his older cousin to work on the farm as well. Both boys are familiar with cattle, as they were responsible for their fathers' herds back in Sudan, but they don't know as much about farms. Both are disappointed when they learn that their employer, Lou, is going to have to sell the farm. Kek takes it hardest, however - refusing to speak to Lou for weeks, and abandoning her cow, whom he has named Gol (meaning 'family').
For awhile everything seems to be going wrong, and Kek decides he will run away and somehow get back to Sudan to search for his mother. He is discovered as he is bidding Gol a farewell, and allows Lou and his cousin to take him back to the farmhouse for cookies and a talk. Kek apologizes for his anger, and finds a home at the zoo for Gol - she becomes part of the petting zoo - and he decides to stay in America, in Minnesota, and wait for his mother to be found. His hope and his patience pay off in the end, and Kek and his mother are reunited.
I loved this story. Kek's trials and tribulations are funny, and his sensitivity in dealing with people (and cows) is so mature. The audio edition was fantastic; Dominic Hoffman really nails Kek's "voice." Even though this was short, it really captures the experience of being an immigrant and a refugee in a way that kids will be able to appreciate. Katherine Applegate's characters are deep and interesting people and their stories and thoughts will keep readers interested and engaged."
"I love listening to my 2-year-old grandson describe things with fresh associations using his newly developing language skills. ("Gandma, rain growls!" is how he expressed thunder.) Sheer poetry. Home of the Brave is about an African refugee who begins life again in America. It reminded me very much of how my grandson is discovering his new world and language. Verse was the perfect medium to tell this story. I predict this will be a very popular book in my library--and not just because there is a lot of white space on the page."
