"One of a number of biographies of explorers written by Ronald Syme, 'Champlain of the St Lawrence' is a terrific antidote to dry, textbook history for younger readers. The broad-brush facts are accurate and the detail provides an exciting and adventure-filled background to the 16th and 17th century exploration by Europeans of what are now eastern Canada and the north-eastern USA. Syme creates a convincing landscape with vivid descriptions of plants, animals and topography and this landscape he engagingly populates with Europeans and American Indians, their food, living conditions, behaviour and weaponry. The text, which maintains an exciting pace, is well-complemented by muscular black and white illustrations by Symes' long-time collaborator William Stobbs. I recommend this book unreservedly for 8 to 13 year olds in its using the often heroic activities of individuals as a version of history quite as relevant as the dates of landmark battles, treaties and so on and yet which fleshes out similarly significant events such as the founding of Quebec with an appreciation that, underlying them, were the actions of real, if often unknown, men and women."
